Publisher's Summary

London, 1884. Sidney Grice is restless, having filed his latest case under S, for 'still to be solved', to await further inspiration. His ward, March Middleton, remains determined to uncover the truth.
Geraldine Hockaday was outraged on the murky streets of Limehouse. Yet her attacker is still on the loose. But then a chance encounter brings a new victim to light, and it seems clear March and Grice are on the trail of a serial offender.

Critic Reviews

Praise for the author: "What is so refreshing about the Gower Street series is that they are never quite what you expect - these unusual originals stand out in what is a heavily populated genre." (Crime Review)

Follows the thread of the series, but...

A little too explicit with the blood and gore (I literally gagged during one scene) and depressing as hell. The plot was engrossing and not easily surmised; however the excessive descriptions of violent death and maimings detracted from the story. I can give credit that my visceral response means it's written with great talent. That being said, I probably will not continue with this series...

So much better than much of the genre

It's hard not to like all of the characters, but I love the mix of Sidney Grice, so much is dislikable by modern standards yet is true to his character, somehow therefore endearing & hilarious. March Middleton provides the perfect foil (& often relief!) to him. Molly is perfectly priceless, I'm considering buying the actual books just to see her language in print. The plots are complex, not the easiest to guess at, can take the right kinds of twists but also don't shy away from tragedy & poignancy. Looking forward to more & can most definitely recommend a listen. One of the best things, as with all Audible books, is the narrator - brilliant & sets the tone & each character wonderfully

A trifle predictable.

I really love this series. I have enjoyed them all, including this one.

The characters are original, flawed but sympathetically wrought and I really like the quirky detail that Kasasian always adds to the narrative. I think this writer is quite special. He completely manages to make the experience of the reader incredibly satisfying without plauging those of us with a weary mind with deep philosophical questions. I think this path requires a great deal of skill and cleverness. Kasasian's clever but he conveys it subtly, unlike his main protagonist, the unintentionally hilarious Sidney Grice. His gin-soaked side-kick, the narrative voice, is also adorable.

The reader, Emma Gregory, does a fine job as she has throughout the series. So, why not five stars? As soon as the prodigal inspector returns offering a happy ending you know where it's going... I don't like to KNOW an ending, I want to suspect.

Should make it into a TV show

Great story and characters, funny and disturbing at times, highly recommended to those who like books of this genre.
