Publisher's summary

In 1829, Jacob and Martin left Kentucky to become Mountain Men, trappers of the Rocky Mountains. The rugged mountains that lay beyond America's frontier remained mostly unexplored. In those days, when beaver were plentiful and the buffalo roamed freely, the killing was good. The two young men would also find that life would be hardscrabble in the high frontier. They would face grizzly bears and hostile Indians. And they would risk horse wrecks and mountain storms to trade their furs each year at "rendezvous". Crossed Arrows is the story of two adventurers who lived hard in the earliest days of the Wild West.

Best frontier story ever

This is by far the best western story of the many hundreds I’ve listened to.

Entertaining

If one lies the setting and looks for a book about western furtrade, indians, trappers, blackpowder rifles, etc. this is a very entertaining option.

Great Story, heart rending

Warning - gang rape, ruthless murder, thieves. Gang rape first off - was it a literary device to grab reader's attention? Horrible. Life long friendships, family loyalty, fantastic outdoor living. Great novel showing how unnecessary most of modern life possessions are and the need for practical skills.

Hated, hated, hated Martin and Jacob and their wonderful pregnant wives getting murdered in the last 30 minutes. Did the author need to just hurry up and finish the story and get it to the publisher?

I loved Singing Bird. Realistic that she died from small pox brought by white men.

Great story about 1800's mountain living - harsh and free - and the thinking/culture of Indians.

Appreciated the portrayal of the Indian squaws as hard working, skillful, knowledgeable, many kind and loving.

Narrator very good except for the onomatopoeia interpretations -- would have preferred more realistic gunshot and other noises, etc. There is a way to do it with the mouth, throat, larynx, lips, etc.

I recommend this book with reservations. Will purchase at least the next sequel.

Bad performance

The story was good, the performer was terrible. He constantly mispronounced words and has no conception of the use of punctuation. His accents are horrible and his tempo sucks. Ruined an otherwise decent story.

Author is callous of the characters

Great story telling up to the point that it is not. I expected much more.
