Publisher's Summary

Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar removed the spectre of invasion and England is now free to seek conquests and colonies in the furthest reaches of the world. Captain Kydd joins an expedition to take Dutch-held Cape Town, a strategic imperative to secure the rich trade-route to India. But even if the British can defeat the enemy and take possession of the capital, there is still more fighting to be done. Kydd and his men must defend the fragile colony from attacks by the enemy from all sides, while braving the wild beasts and hostile environment of Africa's vast and savage hinterland.

J S Gets 5 Stars for Creativity

J S has written a very creative account that plops the reader down into Cape Town So. Africa - of all places - in the middle of a maritime series! It is a very fun ride!!

Starts slow, then GO!

Stockton puts together an exciting romp in this story. Although the beginning gets bogged down in historical details (although interesting, not compelling enough to NOT use the sleep timer at night on the Audible App.) Then, suddenly, Nicholas Renzy becomes center stage pursuing the rumor of a secret military action by the French. Unbeknownst to him, Kidd is working the same angle from the naval side. It ends up with them meeting in the jungle of South Africa with an all-or-nothing gambit to secure the colony for the British.

Slightly more of a slow-burner but still excellent

This episode retains many of the traits that we have come to expect from Julian Stockwin,. It is thoroughly researched without being overbearing, beautifully described and characterised superbly by Christian Rodska. The usual rich cast of characters are once again blended seamlessly against a background of real historical events.

Kydd's adventures this time see him more on land this time and the battle descriptions are excellent showing that the author is more than just a naval buff! Seeing Kydd and particularly the mercurial Renzi immersed into the birth of empire adds to the atmosphere.

This one didn't grip me all the way through like most of the others have but builds to an excellent conclusion that makes it yet another book well worth listening to in this series.
