Publisher's summary

Yesterday Bob Baker had cleaned the house and placed a vase of wild flowers on the table, as well as a tablecloth. He made sure all the lamps were full of oil and that there was plenty of wood brought in to use in the stoves and fire place. It was early fall and the early mornings and late evenings were starting to grow cold. Bob was preparing for a very special day. For today his mail order bride would be arriving by coach.

A Clean Mail Order Bride Short Story

China Doll was a pretty good story. The story itself was believable as there were mail order brides back in those days. I thought the story, by Gregory "Doc" Patton was well-written. I enjoy listening to mail order bride audiobooks. They're relaxing and not too complex, I'm not sure the narration was there for this story though.

Kevin Iggens' narration seemed monotone. I would've liked to hear more voice inflections and feelings to reflect the characters of Bob and Luong. He kept a steady pace, I'm just not sure the narration matched the book well.

China Doll

A short story of a mail order bride coming to America. An ok story but the narration by Kevin Iggens needs some work. His reading is like listening to an 8th grader read.I was given this book free by the author, narrator or publisher.

Ok

This story was more a presentation of the authors poems than story. The story would happen then a poem about what just happened would come next. So you got the same thing twice. The narrator was good for this western and helped move the story along. I could have used more story and less poems. I got this ARC via audiobook boom

Idyllic rancher story

This isn't a conflict-driven story. It is a peaceful one about a lonely man finding mutual love with his mail-order bride. Since it's a short listen, it makes for something good to listen on a lunch break or while waiting for food to get done cooking. Very light and easy listen.

There were some jarring parts, like the rhymed poetry, which confused me at first until I rewound to figure out what was going on there.

The writing is straightforward and direct. It's simple, and that's not necessarily a bad thing for the gentle story it's trying to tell. It's also informative about ranching life. This is pretty much a "take it as it is" story that has a tendency to "tell" more than "show."

I would have rated it higher if there was less telling. That would have helped me to fall in love with Luang like Bob did, and vice versa. The story moved fast in that regard.

Voice work was plain, which suited the plain narrative style. I would've liked to hear more variation in the characters. There were times when Luang would say things and I'd think Bob said them or the other way around. More inflection in the voices would have helped that.

All in all, a peaceful little story. A light listen. Kind of like a beach read.

I received a copy from the narrator, writer, and/or publisher and have voluntarily chosen to give it an honest review.

Straightforward Mail Order Bride Story

This is a story about a mail order bride from China. Follow the transitioning of Luong to America and her experiencing new customs. Bob is the rancher who is searching for love from a Mail Order Bride Catalog. Was a little shocked that sexual acts were introduced before they even got to know each other without building any form of trust.

Kevin Iggens has a clear, articulate voice. His speech patterns were easy to follow. The performance was straightforward like someone reading a book. I missed feeling and emotion coming out of the performance.
