Publisher's summary

Winner of two Black Writers Alliance Gold Pen Awards and an Honor Award from the American Library Association, Bernice L. McFadden has authored several national best-sellers, including Suger and This Bitter Earth.

Camilla's childhood was immersed in chaos and love, and steeped in the myth of perfection. As an adult, she never looked back, refusing to acknowledge the people and places that had scarred her so many years ago. But a legacy of cancer proves inescapable, forcing Camilla to embrace the past - no matter how painful it may be - and to salvage what is left of her love in order to save her daughter. As Camilla discovers the bittersweet limitations of motherhood and reconciliation, she also awakens an inspiring message about the mortality issues we all must face.

You cannot run from yourself

This story was excellent, many of us don’t want the life we were born into, but the fact is no matter how much you change yourself or how far removed you become you cannot ever escape who you really are. Change for the better but never forget who you are or where you came from,

fantastic read!!

I truly enjoyed this book, as I always love Ms McFadden's books!! They end too soon, because they are so good and you just can't stop reading!! Initially the narration is a little nerve wracking, as the narrator is a bit too slow!! But because the story line itself is do good, you generally forget that!!

A multigenerational family story

There were a few times that the story seemed a little disconnected but for the most part it was well told. The story of how families cope and grow. They don't always thrive well but they grow whether nurtured well or not. They survive even though they may be fractured. Home is always home something always brings you back. Good story.

Good story, narrator needs water

The story was good, but the narration was lacking. There was a lot of distracting swallowing and dry mouth sounds close to the mic. Made it difficult to pay attention.

Narrator threw me off

The narrator constantly swallowed into the mic. I can hear her saliva moistening her lips. It was rather distracting for me.

The he importance of family

Life has a lot of twist and turns, as this book illustrates. The one downside is the narrator, who I normally love had too much wait time in between chapters; I thought there was something wrong with my app. I like the way Maggie had a prominent role in this storytelling. It seems that she may have been of a lower IQ, therefore, the trauma she experience with the loss of her husband, the one who was originally her sister’s lover; didn’t leave her crippled. I like the way Velma and Maggie‘s mom made sure that the sisters were back together. Forgiveness. It was interesting how Camila chose the route she did; that is forgetting about her family until a tragedy occurred. Overall, it’s a good listen.

Annoying dry mouth narration

It took slot to keep listening as the narrator gulped while reading, won’t listen to her again.
