Editorial reviews

This spectacular novel about the Alaskan fishing industry is written in an immediate, highly detailed style, so that listeners are able to fully imagine the Alaskan landscape, weather, sea, and even the details of particular fish. Aaron Abano is an enthusiastic and lively narrator; his voice dips and swells rather like the sea itself. Breakers is the sequel to McCloskey's best-selling Highliners, so listeners may wish to experience that audiobook first, so that they can familiarize themselves with the book's brave characters. Breakers is a thrilling dip into the world of Alaskan Fishing, with all its danger, excitement, and adventure.

Publisher's summary

The triumphant sequel to William McCloskey’s bestselling novel about the commercial fishing industry.

William McCloskey’s best-selling novel Highliners established him as an authority on the dangers and hardships of the Alaskan fishing industry. Now in an epic sequel, Breakers returns to Kodiak to chart the fortunes of McCloskey’s beloved characters as they make their living from the sea.

A respected skipper, Hank Crawford runs his own boat and is well liked by his crew. Yet Hank knows all too well that with a hefty mortgage to pay off, a brand-new boat, and an even newer baby, he and his family need the crab and salmon to keep coming into their nets.

But as every fisherman knows, the sea is a fickle mistress. The crab season is the poorest yet, and salmon prices drop. When his child falls ill and his boat gets damaged, Hank journeys in desperation to his partners in Japan. Here he faces a moral crossroads: compromise his own business ethics or risk losing everything he’s worked for.

With the same thrill of danger, McCloskey captures the excitement, the drama, and the never-ending fears that are the landmarks of the commercial fisherman’s trade. Breakers is truly a triumphant addition to the saga Highliners sets in motion.

Brings me back to when I was a kid!

These books are set where I grew up. I was 10 in 1978. Familiar names make me smile. Was married to a boat captain Kodiak BB and out of DUT for almost 3 decades.
The narrator does better then most with Alaskan pronunciations. Not perfect, but not bad. Who knew who have such precise ways of saying things. Lor-An radar not Loren.
