Publisher's summary

This masterwork of American immigrant literature is set in the 1920s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and tells the story of Sara Smolinsky, the youngest daughter of an Orthodox rabbi, who rebels against her father's rigid conception of Jewish womanhood. Sarah's struggle toward independence and self-fulfillment resonates with a passion all can share. Compelling and beautifully written, Bread Givers is an essential historical work with enduring relevance.

Lovely

I read this novel decades ago while in college. I was so excited to find it in audible form. It was like meeting up with an old friend. I remember hating that father and all his foolishness. I hated what he had done to his wife and children. And then through Sarah’s journeys, we see an unbelievable amount of forgiveness on Sarah’s part. Bread Givers gives the Eastern European immigrants the focus they deserve. How hard immigration is to those who only want to better or save their lives. Somethin to keep in n mind today.

Amazing!

I loved this book! I had to listen/read for my social work culture class and It was hard to stop listening! Traditions are not all the same but the structure is no different no matter where you come from.

Great!!!!

A melancholy read and an example of the history of the immigrant suffering in the "golden medina".

A Good Read! Amazing!

This was actually a really good book! I have never really read a book in school just cause I am not much of a reader. However, reading this book may have just opened me up to read a bit more. This book was very interesting and kept my attention the entire time!

Daddy Problems

It definitely made my blood boil because Sara’s dad is so old school that you wish you could strangle him. A great story, wish her sisters had a similar ending.

Great book

I felt like i was literally a part of the story as it was being read to me. Not only did Yezierska do a great job writing this book but Zackman did a fantastic job narrating it. This book definitely gave me an insight into the life of Jewish families in the 20 century. I will be reading more of her work.

Vivid. True to Life. Captivating.

Vivid. True to Life. Captivating. Loved it. Took me away to a time of less, helping me to appreciate what we have now compared to then. Author did a wonderful job.

fundatory

I had to read this for a history class and I'm glad I did. It was so moving and I felt my feelings about certain characters change as fast as the narrator. A must read
