Publisher's Summary

Mattie Ryder is a marvelously funny, well-intentioned, religious, sarcastic, tender, angry, and broke recently divorced mother of two young children. Then she finds a small rubber blue shoe - the kind you might get from a gumball machine - and a few other trifles that were left years ago in her father's car. They seem to hold the secrets to her messy upbringing, and as she and her brother follow these clues to uncover the mystery of their past, she begins to open her heart to her difficult, brittle mother and the father she thought she knew. And with that acceptance comes an opening up to the possibilities of romantic love.In a disarming blend of everyday life and the sublime, of reverence and irreverence, and of humor and grace, Anne Lamott speaks directly to our most closely held concerns, bringing comfort to anyone - all of us - whose family life can feel overwhelming and uncontainable.

What's going on?

I found this novel confusing. There are a lot of characters and I couldn't identify them all. The narrator's reading seems flat to me and not really the best voice for the story. I was surprised, expected more skillful storytelling, but I could never quite decide if it was sort of feeble writing or dissonant reading. Sometimes there are wonderful sentences, but sometimes there's way too much detail and it's hard to care about the conditions and situations of the characters.

Didn't find it here

I bought this book because I'd heard Ann Lamotte was a spiritual, perhaps Christian, writer and was looking for smart, maybe even uplifting, characters and a story line that would strengthen my heart. This story line of a weak-willed and selfish woman who divorces her philandering husband then sets about breaking up another marriage in pursuit of her own happiness disappointed on both counts. Not sure if I was supposed to cheer in victory when she marries her sweetheart on the beach. Instead, I turned off my reader glad I didn't have so spend another minute with any of the characters.
