Excellent narration of a heartfelt story
I read this wonderful story when it was released, and grabbed up the audio when it came out. As someone who listens to a great many audiobooks, I'm quite discerning in my opinion of narration. I'm happy to say Marc Bachmann gives a brilliant performance with Betting on Forever. This book not only features the two main characters Zach and Sam, but also their four best friends, both of their mothers, and several other side characters. Mr. Bachmann gives everyone a distinct and fitting voice - complete with NYC flavor - while turning no one into a caricatrure. I had the most enjoyable time listening to this as I took a road trip. It made the miles fly by. I'll be seeking out other titles by this narrator.
This is my favorite story by Felice Stevens. Zach and Sam are both men who've been hurt by life and by love, something most of us can relate to! Having gotten to know Zach somewhat in 'Second to None' I was eager to uncover his layers and see him get his chance at happiness. It didn't come easy! I fell for the sexy and affable Sam as quickly as Zach did and was soon caught up in their struggle to overcome old fears, habits and heartache.
What I love best is the author's ability to make the character's journeys so relatable to the reader. Nothing felt contrived or forced. Both men had to make conscious effort to move out of comfort zones, to take risks and let the chips fall. All of their friends were there to support without being pushy or preachy. Best friends who are meddlesome are a turn-off for me but this is so not the case with Marcus, Julian, Nick and Henry. After a lot of soul searching, heart-to-hearts, scorching sex, and few arguments - Zach and Sam ended up in a sweet, loving place in their lives. The follow through with their mothers' journeys was also great to see, as was the advancing of Julian and Nick's relationship. A very genuine and heartwarming story.

Zach deserves all the stars.
I would give all the stars for Zach if I could, but unfortunately Sam knocked them down. And so did Marcus, if I'm being honest. Although towards the last 10, 15, 20% they both kind of redeemed themselves, it just wasn't enough for me.
I adored Zach and thought he was a complete sweetheart. I wanted him to find all the love and be happy! I had high hopes for Sam, that he'd be just the right man for Zach. That first meeting gave me such a good feeling. But then when they reconnected, there were times I really didn't like him- the way he judged Zach and jumped to way too many conclusions frustrated me to no end. I know he had his own issues, but I just didn't get that warm fuzzy feeling about him.
It actually pains me not to be able to give this a higher rating, but I just can't. Maybe this is one I should have read instead of listened to. When I get some free time I think I'll do that.
