Publisher's summary

Author of the #1 best-seller The Book of Negroes, Lawrence Hill is a writer of immense talent—and his literary reputation grows with each new work. Canadian Langston Cane V finds his writing career (and, indeed, his life) in stasis until inspired by his mentor to write about an ancestor who purportedly died fighting alongside John Brown at Harpers Ferry. Traveling to Baltimore, the latter-day Cane delves into history and in so doing awakens to new possibilities.

A stellar performance

I greatly enjoy the way Lawrence Hill combines historical facts with fictitious characters to portray life of a by-gone time. The narration by Kevin Free was superb and made the different characters come alive. He really has talent to match the authors! it is a good pairing, like Jim Dale for Harry Potter. In both instances, the narrator brought a colorful interpretation to the author's words ( although both Rowling's and Hill's stories are quite alive already!) To listen to Free's imaginative narration is an enormous delight! I am eager to read anything else Lawrence Hill writes. Lawrence Hill's writing has given me a way of facing more squarely the horrendous atrocities of slavery and bigotry. As a white person, I often cringe at reading about how my race thought about other races and am relieved that gifted writers like Lawrence Hill can create stories that allow me to better come to grips with history. We can't undo the damage that prejudice and bigotry perpetrated in the past, but we can admire those that have risen above hatred and are contributing so much good to our lives now. Thank you Lawrence Hill and Kevin Free. A great team!

Best Story Ever!

This book was captivating with non stop humor. I enjoyed every moment and each character. This should be a Broadway show, it would be a hit. I wished that it would never end. I feel in love with each Langston Cane and Mill. Thank you Lawrence Hill, for your wonderful voice and passion for life through legacy.
