Publisher's summary

Two orphan girls are taken from their jobs in a pants factory in North Korea, spirited across the Demilitarized Zone to be sex workers in the South, and eventually shipped to the United States. What propels the story is Gi, the heroine: a tender-hearted genius who loses everything yet refuses to be destroyed.

Reminiscent of Memoirs of a Geisha, All Woman and Springtime reveals with chilling accuracy the facts of life behind North Korea's iron curtain, the horrific underworld of the sex trade, and the resilience of a spirit in the midst of unspeakable oppression.

Critic reviews

“One of the most absorbing, chilling, beautifully written and important novels I have read in many years.” (Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple)
“A lovely novel brimming with heartache and hope in equal measure. Jones has a gift for empathy as well as a keen sense of justice. This book will open your eyes, break your heart, and then mend it again.” (Tayari Jones, author of Silver Sparrow)

This book is great!!

What did you love best about All Woman and Springtime?

The characters were so well developed and the imagery he created of North Korea was amazing. Believable storyline and kept my interest up until the very end.

Any additional comments?

I was furious and so caught up.

This book was so heart warming at time. It angered me and put me in a world of emotions. This book was hard to read/listen to. Not because it wasn’t good but the vile treatment of these young girls. Although it was hard to get through this book emotionally. I couldn’t stop reading because I needed to know the happily ever after end or not so happy end. This made me question why and how could they countless of times. I absolutely appreciate how they had back stories to each character in this book. Not only the young girls but their captures. This book is not for the faint of heart.

Stayed with me long after I heard it.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I listened to this book a couple of years ago and it is one I still think about all the time. It gives real insight to what it's like to be part of this culture.

Moving and Emotional Story

The author gives a depressing, but accurate glimpse of life for the majority of those living in North Korea. The first three quarters of the book was well developed, but the ending was a bit rushed. I would have liked to have learned more about how Gi's life progressed. The narrator was superb.
