O. Henry Prize-winning author Viet Dinh takes us on a moving and evocative journey through an India set with smoky funeral pyres, winding rivers that hold prayers and the deceased, and the rubble of Gujarat, a crumbling place wavering between life and death. As the four men fight to impose order on an increasingly chaotic city, where looting and threats of violence become more severe, they realize the first lives they save might be their own.

Annoying narrator, patchy story.
Let's start by saying the narrator is awful. His mock-British accents made my teeth ache and the pinched pitch he used to narrate women is laughable. The story itself is weak enough to be further weakened by this performance - shame, as the subject matter is interesting and the ideas compelling, it just falls flat as far as execution goes.

A read that could pace with your mood, frame of mind and the narrator's emotion. A story or multi-culturalism in the context of raw human deprivation and experiences. A glimpse into the souls, minds and textures of those at precipice of life and agony. Each word carried thoughtful message of love, hope and despair.
