Publisher's summary

When Blinking Jack Stokes met Ruby Pitt Woodrow, she was twenty and he was forty. She was a carefully raised daughter of Carolina gentry and he was a skinny tenant farmer who had never owned anything in his life. She was newly widowed after a disastrous marriage to a brutal drifter. he had never asked a woman to do more than help him hitch a mule. They didn't fall in love so much as they simply found each other and held on for dear life.

"Kaye Gibbons shows us the secret core of love that easily outlasts death. It's invisible mastery - but mastery all the same." (Reynolds Price)

Simply Delightful

A simple little novel about ordinary people...and yet I liked them immediately and cared about what happened to them. It's hard to believe that the narrators, (the author and a man), were not actually these people. The man, especially, was so real, and someone you would love to meet. I'm glad I stumbled upon this one!

Author shouldn’t narrate

I rate the performance low primarily because of the performance of Kaye Gibbons. She’s an author, but not a good enough actress or performer to make this audiobook enjoyable. Very monotone. Weird cadence. Stick to writing.

A real wife is really missed

A warm, real look at a good wife and her marriage at the end of her life. Her thoughts and those of her husband's, throughout the time of her illness, and past the end of her life, are quietly shared and deeply felt. Simple people, sharing simply the truth.

worse I have heard

I love Kaye Gibbons work but, in my opinion, this was her worse. And the narrator was even worse than worse, terrible monotone voice I couldn't stand to listen to. i wish I had read the reviews first. Save your time and money don't bother.

Perfect Audiobook

Really well suited to audiobook, the story is narrated in the personal voices of the two characters which makes it a really enjoyable listen.
