Publisher's summary

Fleeing a troubled past, Sarah Faust has found the perfect place to begin a new life. Tucked away on a charming side street and surrounded by lush grounds, the neglected 300-year-old townhouse in the port city of Charleston offers a refuge and a place to start over. But all is not as it seems at Five Rue Lane, and she soon finds that her new house harbors something that has been there for a very long time. Something that refuses to stay buried. In A Haunting, L. I. Albemont brings us parallel tales of old and modern horror, weaving colonial era events into a modern ghost story you won't soon forget.

Animals and children

This book was a huge disappointment to me. I like a good ghost story very much, and I like a good home rehab book very much, especially if it's spiced up with some bumps in the night and creepy atmosphere. In other words, I like a nice cozy ghost story.
This book sounds like that's exactly what it is both from the description and from the reviews that I read, but in my opinion a cozy ghost story does not torture and abuse either children or animals. It's very disappointing because the home rehab and atmosphere of the town in general were all one could ask for from a cozy. This just made the ugliness of the savagery directed at the animals and children all the more jarring. If you like animals (especially cats but also dogs) and/or children, I advise you to give this book a miss.

A little predictable

l enjoy a good ghost story with minimal violence and this book fit the bill. It was predictable in places and not enough back story in other places.
I felt the last chapter didn't really line up with the rest of the book.
For me the last chapter was WTF.

If you enjoy these type ghost stories I highly recommend Family Plot by Cherie Priest.

Horror?

the story is a little bit interesting which is why I was able to finish this book. But as a hardcore horror fan looking for something to Spook me up a little, I was extremely disappointed in this. nothing was ever scary or spooky nor did it get my hairs standing at any point. It's worth the read if you just need a story. If you're looking for horror, find yourself a better book.

Pretty Much A Lifetime Movie

Ugh.

I knew I'd wasted my time when I heard "she-mullet."

Not much of an ending, lots of pointless events.

Hokey plot.

Not really an ending...

Book was good, narrator was excellent (as she always is) but there was no ending. It felt like the end of a chapter not the end of the book. I hope the epilogue was not a sneak peek of a #2 with new characters, Id like to know what happens with these characters first. Overall I did really enjoy the book, it held my interest all the way through...and beyond.

Enjoyable, scary at times...

I loved it, although storyline was a bit predictable, THEN it took a surprise turn for a terrific ending.

Just…not good

The story begins as a promising haunted house story set in picturesque Charleston, SC. However, by the last fourth of the book, it turns into a less than believable story involving stereotypes of witchcraft and a sensationalized exorcism/spell/something that would’ve fit in not even a B horror flick. It was poorly researched, in my opinion, regarding the aspects of this, and even the mentions of what one would see in Charleston or the culture in the low country were not well done at all and read more like something from a poorly written tourist guide than from someone who had done their research on the area. Also— *don’t read if you like animals*

The instances of animal slaughter or simple animal deaths were entirely unnecessary to the plot or even the sensationalized ending. Again, this is a point to the clearly poor research done by the author on the entire subject of the book.

Needed more

Would you try another book from L. I. Albemont and/or Teri Schnaubelt?

A Haunting overall was a good story and keep me listening. I enjoyed the narrator and thought that the characters were genuine and likable. Additionally, I enjoyed the detailed description of Charleston and the mix of old and new. I just wish there were more to the story and how certain characters were involved in this tale.

If you’ve listened to books by L. I. Albemont before, how does this one compare?

This was my first experience with this author.

What about Teri Schnaubelt’s performance did you like?

Enjoyable and talented narrator.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Sure

Great steady story

I like that this book kept the characters to a minimum and the concepts were believable. Excellent job. Great narration.

Great story !

I absolutely loved this book. Everyday I could not wait to listen to it in my car on the way to and from work. I really got a sense of being in Charleston where this great story takes place.
