Where does A Gentleman's Position rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Easily in the Top Five. Actually, in order to keep my top five from being taken up by the three books in this series, I include them as a group. They are all extraordinary, but this one is tremendous.
What did you like best about this story?
The absolute usurpation of various tropes and expectations based on the appearance and status of the characters. Charles always has a strong command of sexual negotiation and politics, but watching two intrinsically Alpha personalities with extremely different psychological expressions find common ground is incredible. Humanizing Richard in particular who has been more of an entity than a person presiding over the Ricardians, is a genuine triumph.
Have you listened to any of Matthew Lloyd Davies’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
His work on this series of books has been absolutely outstanding. His commitment and delivery are impeccable, making everything from seditous politics, printmaking, to sex vivid and immensely enjoyable to listen to.
