Publisher's Summary

Award-winning author Miriam Toews is known for her razor-sharp wit. In A Complicated Kindness, Mennonite Nomi Nichol belongs to “the most embarrassing subsect of people to belong to if you’re a teenager.” Her mother and sister have already fled their fundamentalist community in Manitoba. Now Nomi, fighting off despair, tries to find herself while hiding behind a facade of biting humor.

What the Critics Say

"Her episodic, highly introspective first novel - part of an emerging subgenre of crossover adult books that might have been published as YA - maintains a careful balance between hilarity and heartbreak that most readers will find unforgettable." ( Booklist)

Wonderfully written story!

The main character is so loveable; she brings the reader on a memorable journey. I have new insights into the Mennonite community and have been reminded that deep-down, we are all the same human creatures and our desires are all similar.
