Publisher's summary

  • Is there a connection between microbes in the soil and in our bodies?
  • Why does a dirty farm offer protection from allergies while a dirty urban apartment does not?
  • What can pastured hens teach us about "good" stress and "bad" stress?
  • How can a vineyard pest management system inspire more effective cancer treatment?
  • What can cows teach us about raising healthy eaters?

Can urban farms reduce neighborhood crime? These may not sound like typical questions for a family physician to consider, but in Farmacology, Daphne Miller, MD, ventures out of her medical office and travels to seven innovative family farms around the country on a quest to discover the hidden connections between how we care for our bodies and how we grow our food.

Miller also seeks out the perspectives of noted biomedical scientists and artfully weaves in their insights and research, along with stories from her own medical practice. Farmacology offers a profound new approach to healing, combined with practical advice for how to treat disease and maintain wellness.

Crystals and all - great book

There's a negative review stating that Christians should beware after chapter 6?, nonsense. There is wisdom available in all studies, which could be the subtitle of this book.
Great read on a Western Scientists journey towards nontraditional medicine. These types of journeys are becoming more and more common as Western med can't seem to keep up with the new realm of modern illnesses people seem to be experiencing.
If you want insight into why all new restaurant menus across the US and Western Europe now have a great deal of special diet designations, this is a good book to start you on your journey.

Good listen, probably a better read...

so much great content, that's really deep, I almost think I need a book to refer to.
great way to get through the big picture and to the point of the information, so definitely something I'd recommend to listeners if you want to start somewhere.

political not practical

I was hoping for practical gardening info that helps increase nutrition in the vegetable garden. She meanders through all kinds of places and people in the country giving "shout outs" to approaches and fads that she uses to defend her points. If you are looking for practical, I highly recommend "Down To Earth" by Monty Don.

Going to buy the hard copy of this one

The content is very informative and well written. The narrator can be a bit robotic at times, but definitely worth the read

interesting view of ecology from a MD POV

this is mainly about a medical doctor realizing soil health helps human health. It is interesting to here medical doctors view point and coming to the realization that doctors dont know as much as you'd think.

Medicine and farming...hmm

This is a very interesting read. I’m a recently retired nurse and I appreciated the fact that Dr. Miller has done such a thorough job in researching her topic, not just her opinion. I will be sending this to my two son-laws, who are in agriculture, encouraging them to consider some of the good ideas it contains. Plus, consider looking for at least a few new food sources for my husband and myself.

Erfectly timed reading for me.

This book was recommended to me by a new friend, a winemaker I admire. I’m so glad I learned of it, too, because it perfectly adds on to the list of resources I’ve been gathering on my epic adventure of regenerative living, working more intimately with the genius of nature and place. A wonderful read that tiddlywinks many more ideas and directions for me to dive into along my journey.
