Great continuation of this series

This is the seventh book in the Greywalker series. It was a solid addition to the series but was pretty contained; there was no new big story-arc started.

I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was very well done. The narrator does an excellent job and sounds exactly like I imagine Harper would. She also does an excellent job distinguishing between voices.

Harper and detective Solis have both been assigned with the investigation of a mysterious ghostly ship that has appeared in the harbor named the Seawitch. Of course the appearance of the Seawitch is linked with a number of disturbing paranormal things. It is up to Solis and Harper to unravel the mystery behind its reappearance before it is too late.

The story is written in a very detailed and analytical way, like all of the books in this series. These book are very heavy on the investigative aspect of the story. In this installment we are introduced to some new paranormal creatures; mainly mermaids and the Father of all Otters.

There isn’t a ton of character growth in this book. Harper spends some time trying to learn how to be a better friend to those around her, but she doesn’t really grow in power or learn to use her power as a Greywalker in new ways. More of the story is spent on Solis and him trying to deal with all of the paranormal things he runs in to. Solis is forced to face some uncomfortable truths and he does grow quite a bit. We learn a lot about Solis and his background.

This wasn't really the start of a new broad story arc, the investigation and the Seawitch mystery are fairly self-contained to this one book. There are some things going on with Quentin and his father that sound interesting and are set up to be dealt with in the next book. This set up leads to us learning more about Quentin’s background.

The plot was well woven and well put together. There are a lot of interesting mystery/paranormal elements that come together in fascinating ways.

Each of the books in this series has focused on something. In this case the book focused on the Father of Otters mythology and boating in general. The story was nicely tied up and there were some things left unresolved that will most likely be tied up in the next book.

Overall a solid addition to this series. The whole book is pretty self-contained and could probably be read just fine as a stand alone novel. It was fun to meet some new paranormal races and we get to learn a lot about Solis and his background. The book sets things up for an interesting storyline involving Quentin and his past in future installments of the series. This whole series is recommended to those who like detailed and analytical investigative urban fantasy.

I love this series!

It's one of the best mystery/fantasy series I've ever come across! It's like Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets NCIS, and is definitely a book that I just can't put down.

Excellent book.

What did you love best about Seawitch?

I wasn't sure if this book would be as good as the previous ones since they had all built to what happened in the last book. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It took a different direction and developed some new characters. This series will definitely stay on my must buy list.

This book was awful

I really should have stoped after labyrinth..... ugh. The whole of the series really could have been wrapped up neatly with that book but I’m an optimist, so I foolishly continued this series. Now I’ve wasted 2 credits on the slow, boring, overly detailed (how is that even a thing in a book) long drawn out books. Also, if I were honest.. I shouldn’t have kept listening after the first book, since I hate this narrator and her long, exaggerated, slow reading style. Ugh.

Apologies,
This book was boring and hard to follow, that is my review.

Too jumbled and fantastical for my taste.

Would you try another book from Kat Richardson and/or Mia Barron?

Probably not.

Would you ever listen to anything by Kat Richardson again?

Highly doubt another opportunity would come up, but if it did, would certainly not decline it.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Differentiate between the characters voices! And, not be so monotone. The lack luster audio and even tonality were making it so very difficult to keep up with the pace of the story- I would either zone out or fall asleep.

Did Seawitch inspire you to do anything?

Unfortunately, not get more audio from this series/author/narrarator. :( and that is honestly not meant to sound mean. :(

Any additional comments?

I am very surprised by all of the excellent high reviews this audio book received, so clearly, I am missing something. I wish I could give those same standards of praises, unfortunately it would not be an honest review. I do however notice that I am in the minority here, so perhaps this is simply not my style of book or choice of narrarator, as many do seem pleased with their experience.

My favorite book in this series

What did you like best about this story?

The story in this book takes you away from the city and out to sea. While it isn't all on the ship, enough of the story takes place in an enclosed environment that you have a chance to focus more on Harper and her ability to solve a mystery. It's a solid mystery and a bit more self-contained that other books in the series.

Which character – as performed by Mia Barron – was your favorite?

Harper's voice is the best, but I found the narration to good overall.

Decent 7th book in the series

Would you consider the audio edition of Seawitch to be better than the print version?

Hard to say...I always both read and listen. But Mia Baron really needs to change her voice for the boyfriend Quinton. I just can't stand it anymore. She makes the character so whiny and dorky sounding. I seriously DOUBT the character of Harper Blaine would date ANYONE who sounded like this. Seriously, Mia...PLEASE change this voice. It's God awful.

Would you be willing to try another book from Kat Richardson? Why or why not?

Absolutely. This is one of my all time favorite urban fantasy series.

Which scene was your favorite?

The build up was great throughout the book. The battle on the ship was very well done and exciting.

Any additional comments?

This was a great offering from Kat Richardson. I love Mia's voice, and have listened to her perform all 7 Greywalker novels. But it has gotten to the point where I can't stomach her males characterizations anymore. Especially Quinton, and Solis. She apparently cannot do a Columbian/Spanish accent, it drove me crazy to listen to her attempt, or lack there of. And her voice for Quinton is just annoying and unbearable at this point. Mia, please fix this!!!
