Publisher's summary

Alastar has settled into his role as the Maitre of the Collegium. Now married with a daughter, he would like nothing better than to focus his efforts on improving Imager Isle and making it more self-sufficient. However, the rise in fortune of the merchant classes in Solidar over the years does not sit well with the High Holders, who see the erosion of their long-enjoyed privileges. Bad harvests and worse weather spark acts of violence and murder. In the midst of the crisis, some High Holders call for repeals of the Codis Legis, taking authority away from the Rex.

Once again, Alastar must maintain a careful political balance, but he cannot avoid the involvement of the Collegium when someone begins killing students. Trying to protect his imagers and hold Solidar together for the good of all, Alastar stumbles on to a plot by the High Holders involving illegal weapons, insurrection, and conspiracy.

love the series

Another awesome book. I do wish I'd started reading the series at Quareyt's story as that seems to be the chronological beginning to the storyline and then gone back to the beginning.
I love the narrator, the only thing that bothered me in this second Alastair book is that the narrator changed the pronunciation of some of the characters names from the previous book. Most notable Alina and Kiron, I was binging and went straight from one audio book to the next and it really threw me, other than that I enjoyed it.

Getting a bit repetitive

I do like this author but lately it seems that many of his books are following the same basic formula.

Great segment

L E Modesitt, jr, continues to create rich worlds and enthralling characters. The twist in this particular segment of the imager portfolio serious can catch you off guard. You may have a thought in the back your mind what is going to happen, who is going to betray who, and yet you still don’t see what’s coming.

Alastar Returns!

Alastar returns 13 years older and wiser having settled into his position at Image Isle, and into being a father of a young Imager daughter.

After a decade of relative peace and prosperity, the High Holders begin fearing the rise of the Factors and seek to restore their past glory. Once again it is up to Alastar to save Solidar from itself!

Fans of Modesitt will know what to expect with book 10 in the series. Modesitt writes fantasy that is a bit heavy on politics and economics of a world. If you are new to the series, start with book 1 or 4.

My only critique is that Alastar doesn't really grow as a character much in the 2 books. Im hoping the next Imager book mixes up the formula a bit.

Good job from William Dufris, but he struggles with the female voices in my opinion.
