Publisher's summary

Ride with the Horsemen of the Apocalypse as they seek to unearth a plot that could plunge all of Creation into chaos!

Ages before the events of Darksiders and Darksiders II, two of the feared Horsemen - Death and War - are tasked with stopping a group of renegades from locating the Abomination Vault: a hoard containing weapons of ultimate power and malice, capable of bringing an end to the uneasy truce between Heaven and Hell...but only by unleashing total destruction.

Created in close collaboration with the Darksiders II teams at Vigil and THQ, Darksiders: The Abomination Vault gives an exciting look at the history and world of the Horsemen, shining a new light on the unbreakable bond between War and Death.

Building Lore without relying on the Video Game

Would you consider the audio edition of Darksiders: The Abomination Vault to be better than the print version?

I the voice actor naturally helped bring this gritty universe to life. His voice range wasn't necessarily great, but given who these characters are and what they had to go through I think the viciousness is better then range in this case.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Darksiders: The Abomination Vault?

I think the biggest problem in this story is that there really is no memorable scene. It's all very well written, but after listening to it twice, I really can't pull out a particular scene that stood out for me.

Have you listened to any of Bob Walter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Bob Walter for some reason always reminds me if Jim Cummings in his gruffer roles, a voice actor I always love hearing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not t o sound repetitive, but I think the biggest problem in this story is that there really is no memorable scene. The revelations that were supposed to be moving, or some of the emotional scens, weren't bad, just this kind of book has a difficult time trying to be an action horror book as well as conjuring up emotions at the same time. not impossible, but very difficult.

Any additional comments?

Anyone who likes the game series, someone looking for a gory mess,or just someone looking to kick back and read whatever, will find enjoyment in this. There are no heavy themes or ground breaking story telling, but a fun book none the less.

I want more!

I loved playing the games even tho Darksiders 3 was a bit of a let down, the over all story of the series is one of my favorites. I was hesitant at first afraid that this would be boring and no where near as good as the games but I was wrong to think so. I almost enjoyed this more than the games. I feel like the personalities of the Horsemen and the their horses shined through very well and I couldn't get enough of Death's sarcasm I litterally laughed out loud a few times. The action was well written and I could see how they would have played out had this story also been a game.

A great read for anyone familiar with the franchis

Listening to this book actually made me look forward to my commute. The author perfectly captures the aesthetic of the series in written form. The descriptions are so vivid, raw at times, that I can easily envision the scenes as if they were ripped from the games themselves.

Bob Walter has the perfect gravitas and intonations for the book. The bellowing of the Charred Council, the gravelly sarcasm of Death, and the solemness of Azrael were absolutely superb. However, his interpretation of War could've used a touch more stoicism. That said, from a series with such a terrific voice cast, Bob Walter filled some massive shoes. He did the characters justice.

There were a scarce few times the narration felt a bit too "read". Like it sounded as if he was simply reading off the page, so the cadence was a tad jarring from time to time. I'm not sure if that's standard for audio books, as this was my first.

Overall, I'm extremely satisfied and left wanting more. With two new games released since this was written, and at least one more on the way, there's bound to be more stories to tell.

Amazing story, somewhat awkward delivery.

I positively loved The Abomination Vault. It gives backstory and context that is sorely lacking from the first Darksiders game, which opts to show and not tell (and just leaves you confused at times). I wont bother parroting what many others have said about how good the story is, so I will mention my only real complaint, which isn't with the book itself, but the narrator.

I can't tell you how many times I was taken out of the moment due to his awkward delivery. It felt as though he was reading through for the first time, which I highly doubt, but his strange cadence was distracting, which you don't want in the narrator of an audio book. Thankfully I was so enraptured by the story that I was able to ignore it part of the time, but it sadly brings down this excellent novel.
