Publisher's summary
This breathtaking, full-color illustrated fantasy is inspired by Chinese folklore, and is a companion to the Newbery Honor winner Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.

However, the peace is shattered one night when soldiers of the Emperor arrive and kidnap the storyteller. Everyone knows that the Emperor wants something called the Luminous Stone That Lights the Night. Determined to have her grandmother returned, Pinmei embarks on a journey to find the Luminous Stone alongside her friend Yishan, a mysterious boy who seems to have his own secrets to hide. Together, the two must face obstacles usually found only in legends to find the Luminous Stone and save Pinmei's grandmother - before it's too late. A fast-paced adventure that is extraordinarily written and beautifully illustrated, When the Sea Turned to Silver is a masterpiece companion novel to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Starry River of the Sky.

Sergey and Marina Dyachenko mix dramatic scenes with romance, action and wit, in a style both direct and lyrical. Written with a sure artistic hand, The Scar is the story of a man driven by his own feverish demons to find redemption and the woman who just might save him. Egert is a brash, confident member of the elite guards and an egotistical philanderer. But after he kills an innocent student in a duel, a mysterious man known as “The Wanderer” challenges Egert and slashes his face with his sword, leaving Egert with a scar that comes to symbolize his cowardice.

Like a Chinese one thousand and one nights
I am a twelve year old boy who loves culture and this book fascinated me. The fact that stories never die is very present as well as the love of culture building stories. I would recommend this book to children fascinated by culture as well as parents who want to show their children this concept of a story and it's importance.
PS: this novel was so intriguing that I took time off playing video games just to write this review.

We enjoyed the stories within the story
My children (ages 5 and 8.5) enjoyed the book, but I kept noticing the black and white portrayal of the emperor, servants. The novel's construction feels like a beginner's attempt at a novel. The story is sewn with thick thread as we say in Poland.

Thank you Grace Lin. What a beautiful and engaging book . ‘When The Sea Turned To Silver’ is a rare & delightful reading experience. My absolute favorite of them all!!
I like that each book may be read by itself . Though the stories weave together.. it is not a “series”.

Everything came together beautifully
It didn't hook me at first, but after years of having it in my audible library, I finally listened past the initial drama of irational fear and then "danger, sorrow and parel" which came on quick before I was invested. BUT, as the story went on I began to really enjoy it. It was creative, culturally researched and the narrator did a great job with this story. It was very whitty in how the author never actually waisted any of our time was quite enjoyable.

fantastic series, story, and storytelling
This series, starting with Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, is a favorite for me and my children. These tales are woven together with such rich themes. A joy to listen to this audio version...

A Bit Disjointed
Overall the book was good. It jumped around a lot and was constantly taking you out of the storyline to provide Chinese parables. It kind of missed the mark for me.

I loved it
Ok, I’ve listened to it about 5 times now and I can’t wait to do more also, I loved the first book and how they both slowly connected. So good job Grace!!!
