Publisher's summary

INCLUDES THE FIRST CHAPTER FROM VINCE FLYNN AND KYLE MILLS’ LATEST THRILLER, ENEMY OF THE STATE!

Before he was considered a CIA superagent, before he was thought of as a terrorist's worst nightmare, and before he was both loathed and admired by the politicians on Capitol Hill, Mitch Rapp was a gifted college athlete without a care in the world...and then tragedy struck.

Two decades of cutthroat, partisan politics has left the CIA and the country in an increasingly vulnerable position. Cold War veteran and CIA Operations Director Thomas Stansfield knows he must prepare his people for the next war. The rise of Islamic terrorism is coming, and it needs to be met abroad before it reaches America's shores. Stansfield directs his protégé, Irene Kennedy, and his old Cold War colleague, Stan Hurley, to form a new group of clandestine operatives who will work outside the normal chain of command men who do not exist.

What type of man is willing to kill for his country without putting on a uniform? Kennedy finds him in the wake of the Pan Am Lockerbie terrorist attack. Two-hundred and seventy souls perished that cold December night, and thousands of family and friends were left searching for comfort. Mitch Rapp was one of them, but he was not interested in comfort. He wanted retribution.

Six months of intense training has prepared him to bring the war to the enemy's doorstep, and he does so with brutal efficiency. Rapp starts in Istanbul, where he assassinates the Turkish arms dealer who sold the explosives used in the Pan Am attack. Rapp then moves onto Hamburg with his team and across Europe, leaving a trail of bodies. All roads lead to Beirut, though, and what Rapp doesn't know is that the enemy is aware of his existence and has prepared a trap. The hunter is about to become the hunted, and Rapp will need every ounce of skill and cunning if he is to survive the war-ravaged city and its various terrorist factions.

Best Rapp Yet

I've read/listened to all Vince Flynn's books, and while I thought the series got a bit tired over the last four books or so, he's shot new life into it with this work. I hope he's smart enough to take this gap between American Assassin and his first Rapp novel, Transfer of Power, and fill in that decade with a decade's worth of new Rapp material from his younger years. He could easily squeeze out eight or nine more annual offerings just by doing that, without allowing the series to get stale. While I'm not a fan of the guy doing the unabridged version, I love Armand Schultz, as both Mitch Rapp and Brad Thor's Scott Harvath. And he did a wonderful job here, bringing Rapp back to a younger, more naive version of the scorned, crusty guy he was by his 43rd birthday in the last novel. Great stuff from both writer and narrator!

If you like the “Jason Bourne” novels/movies, then you’ll like this...

Fast-paced excitement espionage stuff. Reminds me a lot of the old Ludlum “Bourne” series, but a much smoother writing style. Very easy to follow storyline that moves along quickly to make for a very entertaining read/audio.

The audible was excellent. Probably one of the best I’ve ever listened to.

Now off to see the movie...which based on the mediocre ratings/reviews, likely digressed from the book and rushed through all the good stuff...ugh.

Great story

As a Brad Thor and Scot Harvath fan, I am pumped to have another hero to root for. This is my first Vince Flynn and I will binge listen till I'm caught up.

Beyond the Formula

Vince Flynn’s American Assassin, while using the formula of American bravery, ingenuity , loyalty and competence winning out against seemingly insurmountable odds, fills in the nooks and crannies of the story with interesting dialogue and believable scenic descriptions. If you like this genre I believe that you will really enjoy this book. Highly Recommended!!

Boring

Boring story with ultra plain characters. Everything is ban and predictable.

Also: who drinks Islay whisky on ice? Total lack of style.

Boring

This author has no idea how to create a believable character. No depth at all. Nothing is truly risked and the story was flat. Read a Jack Carr book instead.
