From the beginning, I couldn't get into this story, but I really tried. I wanted it to work. I haven't read any preceding stories in this series, and that made it almost impossible for me to get into the story. I could follow the storyline, but I couldn't care because the purpose was to continue a storyline with the assumption that the listener/reader already cared. There was very little in the story formed to elicit new care and interest. So, in the end, I disliked Brody and was indifferent about Zara. Maybe I would've liked Brody if I was introduced to him in an earlier story in the series. I question this though because his disregard about taking life and Zara's disregard of it too was problematic for me. It went beyond recognizing that it's necessary at times; the life of people outside of his circle of care was just worth nothing, had no degree of importance. And Zara was turned on by his willingness to kill "for her."
The sex between Brody and Sara was hot and just the right amount. Sex is not used gratuitously, and it's different because they're an already-established couple, though there's a bit of anxiety inserted. Power and control are major elements of their sex and is used effectively in the story. And it was slightly interesting hearing Zara find her place in the Kindred and find out a bit about some of the other male Kindred. And it is replete with action. The abundance of money, as is common, plays a part in how things unfold and the options available and easy. I tire of that trope. That's not reality for most of us.
So I managed to listen to 4 hrs and then skipped to the end just to call it a day. This is my first try with this author, but, unfortunately, there was nothing that makes me want to go back and read previous stories in the series.
