Publisher's summary

There's a new set of 3Rs for our kids - respect, responsibility, and resilience - to better prepare them for life in the real world. Once developed, these skills let kids take charge, and let parents step back, to the benefit of all.

Casting hover mothers and helicopter parents aside, Vicki Hoefle encourages a different, counterintuitive, yet much more effective, approach to parenting: for parents to sit on their hands, stay on the sidelines - even if duct tape is required!

Witty and straight-shooting, Duct Tape Parenting entertains as it informs parents how to do less in order to raise more confident, capable children.

Includes a foreword by Alex Kajitani, the 2009 California Teacher of the Year and Finalist National Teacher of the Year.

Parenting for the long haul

Any additional comments?

Vicki Hoefle has written about her parenting philosophy, based on the work of psychologists Afred Adler and Rudolph Dreikurs. If you are seeking a book with "quick fix" ideas for parenting, this is not it. This book is written on the premise that parents contribute to the very negative behaviors they most do not want to see continue in their kids by what they respond and attend to.

Ms. Hoefle suggests that parents begin by trying to think farther into a child's future, to consider how they would like their kids to turn out as adults, how they will manage in society. Toward this end, she suggests that parents be careful to avoid responding to behaviors that could have long term consequences to a kid's future and be responsive instead to behaviors that will serve their child well as they are moving forward into maturity (respect, responsibility, etc.).

I think this is a useful book for parents, teachers, grandparents..anyone who loves and interacts with children.

Inspiring, thought-provoking, call to action

What did you love best about Duct Tape Parenting?

The author makes it clear why typical parenting approaches don't work and why hers is a better way to go in the long term. She inspired me to rethink and behave differently as a parent. I am a better mother for having listened to this book. More importantly, I can see that my children's lives will be far better served by this approach to parenting, A strong statement, yes, and I believe it because I could already see a difference before I'd even finished the book, and now even more so with a few weeks practice.

What does Vicki Hoefle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Passion, commitment, experience.

Hard work but life changing

Powerful lessons. Leaves me wondering about ADHD kids and mixed families with different households. Something to figure out for ourselves. Advice would be appreciated though. Thanks!

EVERY PARENT.. hear me now.. MUST READ THIS BOOK

Would you consider the audio edition of Duct Tape Parenting to be better than the print version?

YES- only because you can accomplish the same information by going for a walk- doing something nice for yourself!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Helicopter parenting is exhausting, overdone, and hinders children from learning real life consequences. Less is more- and everyone is happier. Let your children live their life for Pete's sake! Whoever Pete is...

Any additional comments?

I was the perfect parent, when I didn't have children. Now that I have 2 of them- understand that no one is perfect- and WE ALL learn from mistakes that we make. Why protect your children from making valuable contributions to their own life? BUY this book- give it as a gift- and help us all to rear our children as self sufficient adults that contribute to society in a positive way!

Such a disappointment

Overall the premise is good - stand back and let your child learn through problem solving - build a relationship with your child and be a guide rather than an authoritarian. Yep, sounds good.

However it’s hard to get over the annoying voice and how this book is read - it’s possible that the material has some use, but the whining, infantile, sing-song tone of the reader made it almost impossible to listen to. I stuck at it to the end in the hope that there may be more substance, but in the end all that I heard was the author smugly congratulating herself on her outstanding parenting skills.

Maybe buy the actual book and not the audible book and then pick and choose the chapters you read. Or just give the whole thing a miss.

Felt condescending

I've read a lot of parenting books and while being hands off has its place, this book will not apply to all family situations. There are much more supportive books available.
