Publisher's summary

The world is facing the greatest healthcare crisis it has ever seen. Chronic disease is shortening our lifespan, destroying our quality of life, bankrupting governments, and threatening the health of future generations. Sadly, conventional medicine, with its focus on managing symptoms, has failed to address this challenge. The result is burned-out physicians, a sicker population, and a broken healthcare system.

In Unconventional Medicine, Chris Kresser presents a plan to reverse this dangerous trend. He shows how the combination of functional medicine, an ancestral diet and lifestyle, and a collaborative practice model can create a system that better serves the needs of both patients and practitioners.

The epidemic of chronic disease can be stopped if patients and practitioners can adapt.

Little new to offer

I have listened to and read Chris Kresser’s work for a couple years now and have always found him informative when it comes to using your diet to curb ailments and promote overall wellness.

That said, I found this book to be little more than a refresher on the basics of healthy ancestral living habits. Of course, the sections geared towards medical professionals are excluded from that opinion because I’m not in that field.

There are no mistakes or questionable ideas in the book, it’s just that most of the information is common knowledge she for those who have invested at least some time learning about ancestral diets and curbing chronic diseases.

I’ll continue to keep the author on my radar but would only recommend this book to those who have never considered healthy habits.

Functional medicine is good

The only thing I got from this book is that functional medicine is good not how to implement it or where to start it just a lot of examples of doctors who where disenchanted with what they where doing and started trying functional medicine. I was really excited for this book and really let down. I'm not a follower of his or someone trying to discredit him just heard him talk about this book and decided to listen to it.

Helped a nursing student reignite their purpose

I am a second degree Nursing student expected to graduate soon. I was beginning to lose sight of my goal of working in functional medicine as a nurse practitioner. After listening to this book I was reminded why I chose this path. This is a must read for anyone medical or nursing student who is feeling burned out and questioning their career goals in conventional medicine.

Great work!

The story is a valuable one and the narrator is supremely knowledgeable but his voice is dull...consider a different/more enthusiastic reader to help get important message across.

The performance could have been better.

if the performer would have just talked it through instead of reading it it would have been better

Can't wait for functional medicine to become mainstream

I've been a medical assistant/medical billing specialit's in primary care for almost 40 years and to say I'm beyond exhausted with the current state of how we treat patients in the conventional system is an understatement. We are doing a great dis-service to our patients by continuing to tread water and play along with the way corporate health care systems and medical insurance providers insist we function. I'm 8 years from retirement. I feel defeated working in this system. I have a passion for eating outside of the SAD and try to encourage people to eat better, exercise, sleep better, and take care of their emotional health, but it's impossible in the setting I work within. I really want out. This is a great read for anyone who feels the same.

Back to the basics

"When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need."- Ancient Ayurvedic proverb.

Truly an eye opener!!

I was Diagnosed with Rieters Syndrome in 1998.
That means I've been ingesting medication since then. My physician, described this Syndrome, to me, "as if I had Cancer. It will be treated and hopefully go into remission. But like Cancer, can and will come back. I will have this disease until the day I die."
And since 1998, doctor's have treated me with possibly ,10's, maybe 20's of different medications. Nothing has worked. But after reading this, I now have hope!!
Thank You Chris Kresser!
I believe this is my light, and the end of this god forsaken illness.
