Publisher's summary

A month has passed since a deadly virus swept the country, killing millions and leaving chaos in its wake. Dale Hardy has managed to weather the storm by hunkering down on his homestead in Arizona. He grows his own crops, generates his own power, and draws fresh water from his own deep aquifer. But when a nearby town's water supply dwindles in the searing Arizona heat, Dale's peaceful existence is threatened.

The new mayor and sheriff want what he has, and they're willing to do whatever it takes to get it. With a crooked local government conspiring against him, Dale will need to stand in defiance or risk losing everything.

Would have given 5 stars.... but

Great book, worth the credit. Problem is where the story ends.

Cliffhanger Alert!!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes...and no. The story was great, the narrator was excellent. But.......well.....let me explain. At this point I'm finished the second in the 'series'. I was listening along, not wanting to turn it off, the tension was at it's peak and wham!: the book comes to an end. Damn! Sucked into a cliffhanger! So what do I do? Buy the next book of course. It's too late, I've already been sucked in.. And to top it off the next book is only 5 hours as well. So, I get into this book. The story follows some twists and turns and now I should be asleep, but I can't because I'm hooked. The tension peaks again and what do I hear? "Audible hopes you enjoyed....." So now the ugly realizations hit. Audible does not have the next book, and I'm left hanging. On top of this is the realization that this really all should have been 1 book and I've been hooked into an expensive way to listen to it! So, if this doesn't bother you go for it. I'm glad I got the first book on sale. That helps ease the sting a bit.

Protect your water, at all costs.

Good story following a families fight to survive after a virus wipes out a sizable chunck of the population. If you have supplies, should you share or look to the future and what is to come? Good story, did stop abruptly, but leaves it all set for book two.

Kevin Pierce delivers a polished performance and makes this an interesting listen. Have now listened to a lot by him and he always delivers a good experience.

Decent book & par for the genre

Would you listen to Defiance again? Why?

Probably not. Mostly because I didn't enjoy the reader. I just could never get comfortable with his voice & pace. The story is OK but the narration made me lose interest. Just my opinion.

What did you like best about this story?

It's an interesting take on the "end of the world virus" story. He goes in a different direction with the locals & townspeople. It keeps you interested.

What three words best describe Kevin Pierce’s voice?

John Wayne-ish. Airy. Slow.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really.

Any additional comments?

It's a good book with a good story. I'm actually thinking about getting it and reading it myself. As I said, the narrator just wasn't for me.

Water Wars - Its a dry day in the desert

If you could sum up Defiance in three words, what would they be?

Life will change

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dale Hardy was my favorite character. He tries so hard to make everything work and to make the world fit inside his plans and it never works the way he plans it. He takes in his family after the flu and strives to be helpful but he ends up bulling his way through getting stuck by his own actions. His softer side shows up when you least expect it softening what you thought was a rough character.

What does Kevin Pierce bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Kevin just brings out the depth of the story with any book he narrates. The Post Apocalyptic genre is hard to read with all the embedded technical terminology. He breezes through it all leaving you with clear understanding of what he was describing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

My favorite part was in the Sheriff's office when Dale went to rescue Sandy and "convinced" Deputy Keith Harris to do as he asked.

Loads of excitment and non stop action

If you could sum up Defiance in three words, what would they be?

exciting fun excellent

What did you like best about this story?

The book started fast and never let up. The book introduces the characters at a natural pace, ast they are encountered. A audiobook is different.I can't go backwards easily and reread who a character is again . The main character Dale is a pretty normal guy with a moral compass of right and wrong unlike some of the characters in the book that take advantage of others

What about Kevin Pierce’s performance did you like?

Kevin is a favorite. He has a pace I like not to fast or slow and his inflection is appropriate at the right times . Some just read the book... Kevin brings it to life,

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A rollercoaster from beginning to end of book 1

Any additional comments?

I cant wait for the book two to see what happens. It ended at a cliff hanger

I was given this book for my review. My review is my honest opinion and thoughts, I really believe fans of dystopian fiction will enjoy this book

Who was your favorite character and why?

Duke

Which scene was your favorite?

The ending... I need to know what happens next

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Great New Series from William Weber

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would Highly recommend this audio book to a friend. It is written by a great post apocalyptic author, set after a flu pandemic in Arizona, and narrated by the amazing Kevin Pierce.

What other book might you compare Defiance to and why?

This book has more of a western feel than traditional post apocalyptic books do due to the setting and the core values of the main characters. I would compare it to any of the Sackett books.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was Dale going to the rescue at the sheriffs station and then on to the TV plant. It was well done with plenty of tension and action.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laugh to myself several times at how slow some of the characters were to adapt to the reality of the situation.

How Far Would you go to protect Your Home

Starts off slow and gets into some character development. Dale is the owner of a home and has a large well on his land. When everything falls apart the only commodity everyone needs of course is water. People have a tendency to try and take what they want. Took me awhile to figure out why he was so determined not to share then the story starts to unfold. Cant say that I am fond of the lead character because I felt his motives were a little suspect Action doesn't really start until the end of the book and then it's slam packed. Had it been more exciting in the beginning I would have liked it a lot better. "War" breaks out at the end and there is a cliff hangar with no place to go. Second book isn't out yet which is a shame. I stop listening to authors that do not have the next book in the series available, as I find that in the meantime I am forced to find something else. Then when the next book does become available I am not convinced I want to spend the credit.
For this one - I will check back from time to time but I will not be disappointed if I don't see Book 2.
