Publisher's summary

Dr. Helen Morrison has profiled more than 80 serial killers around the world. What she has learned about them will shatter every assumption you've ever had about the most notorious killers known to man.

Morrison, a leading expert on serial killers, has spent as many as 400 hours alone with depraved murderers. In My Life Among the Serial Killers, Dr. Morrison relates how she profiled Richard Otto Macek, who chewed on his victims' body parts, stalked Dr. Morrison, then believed she was his wife. She conducted the last interview with Ed Gein, the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. John Wayne Gacy, the clown-obsessed killer of young men, sent her crazed Christmas cards, and gave her his paintings as presents. Dr. Morrison has received letters from killers, read their diaries and journals, evaluated crime scenes, testified at their trials, and studied photos of the gruesome carnage. She has interviewed the families of the victims, and the spouses and parents of the killers.

Through it all, Dr. Morrison's goal has been to discover the reasons why serial killers are compelled to murder, how they choose their victims, and what we can do to prevent their crimes in the future. Her provocative conclusions will stun you.

Left sitting in a hole.

I found that the book was full of great information and seemed to comply with a lot of information I've read on serial killers, which was to my dismay. The one "controversial" fact outlined in this book was the genetic factor of serial killers which I felt the author didn't touch on nearly enough and had no research backing up her argument. She excuses this fact and just leaves you with a feeling of "that's plausable". If you go into this book not expecting a conclusion, you will be satisfied.

I had a series of books to choose from for the final in my psychology need to do a book report there was like 50 to choose from. Varying from bi polar manic split personality etc then I seen this one And I was just drawn to it. Since I was like 7 or 8 ppl would ask what I want to be when I grow up most day Dr actor singer then their was me telling anyone I want to understand the brain of a serial killer (it always followed w strange looks) this book was everything I've always dreamed of doing and currently attending for. Where she left off is where I can continue was disappointed Bundy wasnt apart of the story. I'm hoping to hear more from her.. even better to one day work together.. I wish

Interesting

I thought this was a very interesting book which gave a lot of insight into what might make a serial killer's mind tick. The author seemed to me to be very knowledgeable and objective in her writing and there was probably only one point that I might have disagreed with and that is that serial killers are born that way. If you like psychology this is very interesting but it's not for the weak stomached because it does go into some detail about the crimes that are very unpleasant.

Interesting

If you could sum up My Life Among the Serial Killers in three words, what would they be?

This book was interesting, but a bit scary. I think it's scary cause serial killers look like everyone else. It's their thinking their actions that sets them apart. The ones described in this book had no feelings or conscience about those they harmed or killed. Several felt as if they were superior to their victims and most everyone else.

Good but...

The title of this work is a bit misleading. It's a little short on both the author's life and the serial killer aspect. While there are some interesting observations, I got tired of the author reassuring readers that she won't share her experiences with her kids. <yawn>

Insight into serial killers

I found this book to be very informative in regards to understanding what goes on in the minds of serial killers. The book was also easy to understand and follow. It’s very rare that one gets the opportunity to see behind the curtain of someone that is professionally researching serial killers. One should know that this is not just about the brain/the why/the mind of a serial killer. The author recounts what took place during the murders as well. I would skip if you don’t want to hear those details or find it hard to listen too. It is beyond disturbing to say the least.

Interesting Story

Read by Helen Morrison, MD...she should stick with Medical Practice not reading audible books. The story was interesting but she read it without emotion...It was HER story and she had no personal emotion in her voice.
