Publisher's summary

Juan Martinez, the fiery prosecutor who convicted notorious murderer Jodi Arias for the disturbing killing of Travis Alexander, speaks for the first time about the shocking investigation and sensational trial that captivated the nation.

Through two trials, America watched with bated breath as Juan Martinez fought relentlessly to convict Jodi Arias of Murder One for viciously stabbing her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander to death. What emerged was a story wrought with sex, manipulation, and deceit that stunned the public at every turn. Arias, always playing the wronged and innocent woman, changed her story continually as her bizarre behavior surrounding the crime and its aftermath came to light. Unwavering, Arias and her defense team continued to play off the salacious details of the case, until she was finally found guilty and - controversially - sentenced to life behind bars.

Now, speaking openly for the first time, prosecutor Juan Martinez will unearth new details from the investigation that were never revealed at trial, exploring key facts from the case and the pieces of evidence he chose to keep close to the vest. Throughout the trials, his bullish and unfaltering prosecution strategy was both commended and criticized, and in his book, Martinez will illuminate the unique tactics he utilized in this case and how they lead to a successful conviction, and - for the first time - discuss how he felt losing the death penalty sentence he’d pursued for years.

Going beyond the news reports, Martinez will explore the truth behind the multiple facades of Jodi Arias. Sparring with her from across the stand, Martinez came to know Arias like no one else could, dissecting what it took for a seemingly normal girl to become a deluded, cunning, and unrepentant murderer.

With new stories from behind the scenes of the trial and Martinez’s own take on his defendant, the book takes you inside the mind of Jodi Arias like never before and is the definitive account of the case that shocked America.

Never Understood His Questioning Technique Before

I watched the whole trial and really miss In Session, TruTV is just garbage programming now.

This book has a lot of neat little details about the investigation and prosecution that I never knew before. I remember watching his cross examination of Arias thinking, "What the heck is he doing?"
I didn't understand why he would suddenly drop a line of questioning to pursuit another topic. He was absolutely right about doing that so she couldn't think ahead and make up excited for everything.
Good Book

Wonderful

Juan Martinez invested countless hours formulating a strategy and an order for witnesses, questioning, and when to reveal information. His meticulous preparation for this trial was amazing to listen to. I finished listening to this book in two days. He's a fantastic prosecutor!

Fascinating subject bad narrator.

Oh why didn't Juan Martinez have Kevin Pierce narrate this audiobook. I'm spoiled by a truly thoughtful presentation that only Kevin Pierce seems capable of delivering. ...

Prosecutor's speak for victims.

As an avid watcher of the trial, I already knew most of the material. However it was very interesting to hear piece by piece how he put this cold blooded murderer in jail

Loved it. Kept my attention through the entire book!

After listening to Serial and undisclosed podcasts I was looking for something similar. Who knew murder cases would be so appealing to me. 😕 haha But this book was well written and they picked the right person to read it.

Fear of the egalitarian consequences

Sadly it's clear Mr. Martinez has fallen victim to overzealous editors and lawyers advising him against including any personal insight about the case. Agreed, he prosecuted the case brilliantly and the book dutifully chronicles his public actions. Yet as an author he flatlined and added nothing new to the story, except his independant subtext highlighting the legal victories regarding gas cans. Those reading this are 90% familiar with the case and need not rehash a watered down version of events. The delayed release was either caused by legal red tape or his overwhelming work schedule. If you're looking for juicy nuggets of insight, integral reactions or personality I'd hesitate recommending it.

I really looked forward to liking this... I'm left omnipotently mix.

Justice was served !

I enjoyed listening to this book, I had started with the hopes of learning something new re: the case, however it contained 98% of info that most of the public already knew, especially those of us who were vigilant in keeping up with the day to day during ,before ,and after trial. I absolutely love Juan and think he did a fantastic job of making sure Jodi would spend the rest of her pathetic life behind bars!!! Juan is the BEST !!

Riveting! Impressive

Having followed the majority of the original trial of Jodi Arias, I felt I was familiar with the details and circumstances surrounding her case. However, this book fills in many of the gaps I obviously missed while emotionally absorbed in the spectacle of the trial as it unfolded in real time.

At that time, my thought was that Juan Martinez excelled in his approach to- and execution of - her prosecution. This was definitively confirmed while listening to his book, CONVICTION, via Audible. The details presented here by Mr. Martinez flesh out the multiple twists and turns of the actual event. His doggedness in the gathering of evidence, as well as his masterful ingenuity in developing the case against Jodi Arias, are impressive - satisfying for anyone who hoped for justice for Travis Alexander.

The crime was indeed heinous and HEARTBREAKING. The fact that Mr. Martinez personally devoted so many years to uncovering the truth is not only laudable but intensely HEARTWARMING.

In addition, Patrick Lawlor - whose voice sounds almost identical to Mr. Martinez - brought the circumstances and characters to life. His narration was flawless! I was riveted throughout the entire listening experience. both the book itself, and the performance are captivating. A+

This book kept me interested

Usually I just listen to my audio books while I am at work. It tends to be a rare book that captures my attention to the point that I choose to listen at home too. This was one of those stories. Very interesting, behind the scenes, glimpse into this fascinating and disturbing case.

Great Listen

What was one of the most memorable moments of Conviction?

I was surprised in almost every chapter with the insight and lengths that they had to go through to unravel the case

What does Patrick Lawlor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Patrick did a great job of getting into "character" for each party involved.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

I had no idea how difficult it was to try this case, as an outsider I thought it was a slam dunk...

Any additional comments?

I listen to audio books everyday as I have a more then 2 hr commute, this was my favorite listen of past 6 months. Worth listening to
