Publisher's Summary

[Contains explicit content] “Queen of Mean” Lisa Lampanelli has an innate ability to put people in their place with her barbed wit, but behind that sharp comedic talent there’s a lot of heart. You can hear some of that heart – and some of those barbs – in Lisa’s story about a wonderful, memorable man she dated and the health concern that drove her away. Where do comedians go when they want to answer questions about stories they’ve told? They come right here, to Hold On. On this episode, your inquisitive host Eugene Mirman politely asks Lisa about being attractively overweight, mafia connections, and, of course, toe limits. You’ll want to know what it all means, we promise. Lisa told her story for the show RISK! in New York.

In each episode of the Audible Comedy series Hold On, host Eugene Mirman (Bob's Burgers, The Flight of the Conchords) pauses the funny stories of comedians and performers to get the skinny behind the story. Featured and future guests include: Andy Richter, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Mike Birbiglia, Reggie Watts, Kumail Nanjiani, Maria Bamford, Hasan Minhaj, John Mulaney, and more! Enjoy new episodes weekly on Audible Channels.

Even kinda horrible insult comics are human....

...and Lisa has a very human story to tell. She tells it very well and Eugene Mirman wisely just gets out of the way for the most part. In other tellings of this story you can find on the interwebz, I was disheartened to see people rip her apart because a) she chiefly lost weight through bariatric surgery, and b) she tells offensive, insulting jokes. She does. I'm not okay with a LOT of her material. But none of that is in play here, and just as we are all imperfect, multi-faceted human beings, Lampanelli is too. This sad, relatable story will likely inspire positive change in more than one listener.
