The Trojan War has been waging for nearly a decade, and really erupted when Helen, the wife to Menelaos, was kidnapped and thus launched the "thousand ships" in pursuit of her. Sophocles was born at Colonus, near Athens in about 496 BC and is considered to be one of the premier playwrights of Greek tragedy. His stories may have been filled with strife, but Sophocles himself was prosperous and came from a good family. It is said that he was handsome, wealthy, and a highly respected citizen of Athens. During his life, he wrote over 120 plays and was instrumental in how plays would eventually be performed, including the addition of stage props.

Ancient Greek play read in ancient English
The narration is good. The translation is ancient and overbearingly poetic. This 1:20 hour play seems endless during the listening for this reason. A modern version is much needed.

A challenging translation, wonderfully read
The narrator has a wonderful voice, clear, strong, yet feminine. I hope to listen to her work again in the future.
I listened to this not long after listening to Iliad and Odyssey, and I was amazed by the contrast. It's a play in one act, in one location, yet there is struggle, joy, and grief, stories of old, and challenges.
The translation is at a reading level that seems way over my head (some college). I don't know if a different translation would have made the story more accessible to me, but listening to it at .75x speed gave me more time to try to process everything (it also gave me more time to appreciate Beth Bostic's voice).
