Publisher's summary

In this, the Henty novel covering the oldest time period of any, listeners will learn much about the domestic life, customs, religion, and military system of ancient Egypt. Amuba, a prince of the Rebu nation on the shores of the Caspian Sea, with his charioteer Jethro, is carried into slavery after losing a battle with the Egyptians. They become servants of the house of Ameres, an Egyptian high priest, and are quite happy there until the priest's son accidentally kills the sacred cat of Bubastes. The locals rise up in rage and kill Ameres, and Jethro and Amuba must escape with the high priest's son and daughter. After crossing the desert to the Red Sea, they eventually make their way back to freedom.

Perfect!

What I LOVED about this book was how brilliantly it was written. The character development is amazing, and they intertwine the story from the Bible of Moses and the Israelites. I love how in the book the characters try to find and love God. God bless!

The Cat of Bubastes

Great book restated facts a few times and at some parts of us boring. But other wise this is a great book. At times it is a tad gory

one God or many?

I particularly enjoyed the theme in the later part of the book of how the characters question who's gods are the most effective and how they resolve that question. It''s not a theme that I expected in the pagan world of Egypt.

Loved it! My daughter and I enjoyed listening to this book together. We giggled at the voice of Jethro, it made us enjoy the story even more. I feel like it was slow start but overall a great story!!!!

Very interesting look at Egypt!

Much of that part of history seems veiled in shadow and unknown. I enjoyed this story because I don't know much about the history of that era / part of the world. It's historical fiction, so the outcome isn't very plausible. But on the whole I really enjoyed it. Enjoyed learning more about the Egyptians and Hebrews. I struggle with Jim Hodges as a reader, but you just have to give it a chance and once you're into the story you forget about the narration.

timeless piece of literature

We absolutely loved this book and audiobook. The narrator did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. This is such a wonderful rich piece of literature largely lost to the masses of the modern world. My 10, 8, 4, and 3 year olds loved this book, as well as my husband and I, and our neighbors 12 and 9 year olds who listened with us. The ending was great, but we all hated that the book was over. So many great twists and turns in the book kept us captivated and wanting to listen more.
