Editorial reviews

Reading Proust's great work, Remembrance of Things Past, may be daunting, but listening - at least to the first part of the seven-section novel - is a riveting experience, an insightful, often funny, poetical exploration of character, place, emotion and idea. In this section, Neville Jason spins out Charles Swann's tale of hapless love and jealousy. Jason is a master at characterizing the multitude of voices and guides us seamlessly through time. After such a short, yet exquisite, sampling of this classic, we are tantalized and long to continue with the narrator.

Publisher's summary

Swann in Love is the continuation of Swann's Way, the first part of Marcel Proust's monumental seven volume Remembrance of Things Past. It tells the story of man-about-town Charles Swann's passionate, tormented love affair with the courtesan Odette de Crecy, and of its surprising outcome. Set in the degenerate demi-monde of 19th century Paris as well as in the fashionable drawing rooms of the aristocracy, this new audiobook vividly brings to life the descriptive genius of the original novel.

Proust Read Well

Whether or not you like Proust (I have mixed feelings), you'll enjoy the voice behind this audiobook. While British readers are frequently an annoyance, this one captures the voices of the characters brilliantly. His rendition of the protestations of the ever-scheming Odette, in particular, are not to be missed. I'll be getting more episodes.

Well swum, Swann!

Swann in Love is the second part of the first book of the seven-volume In Search of Lost Time / Rememberances. As with this entire series, it is beautifully narrated by Neville Jason. The books tells the story of Swann's courtship of Odette de Cr?cy. Proust is an unhurried author, who delights in ordinary events, and this book is no exception. Helicopter explosions are at a minimum, and I cannot recollect any noteworthy car chases or bloody murders. If you like really wonderful writing, a relaxed pace, and are after a break from a diet of thrillers, you will really like this.

False advertising

Although the performance by Neville Jason is fine, this is not the entire "Swann in Love," so I feel that I have been cheated. There are portions that have simply been deleted -- or "edited." Purchasers should have their credit restored.
