Publisher's Summary

I read the other day some verses written by an eminent painter which were original and not conventional. The soul always hears an admonition in such lines, let the subject be what it may. The sentiment they instill is of more value than any thought they may contain. To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, that is genius. Speak your latent conviction, and it shall be the universal sense; for the inmost in due time becomes the outmost, and our first thought is rendered back to us by the trumpets of the last judgment. Familiar as the voice of the mind is to each, the highest merit we ascribe to Moses, Plato and Milton is that they set at naught books and traditions, and spoke not what men, but what they thought.

I’m not a big fan of the traditional type of self-help books. When it comes to positive affirmations, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Self-Reliance” essay is much more up my alley. Although it was written in the 19th century, it’s chock-full of ideas that are still relevant today. In the modern world, when the internet has made the world feel so much smaller, it’s easy to get caught up in the crowd and just go with the flow. That’s the kind of thing Emerson is railing against. And in the United States, in the wake of the campaign season and subsequent election, it’s important to remember that truth is internal. If you trust yourself, you can always rely on yourself. Self-reliance, eh? Listen to this audiobook if you need a reminder. It’s quick and easy and will give you a boost.

RWE Is Great As Usual

Ralph Waldo Emerson is always great. I have just started getting into audiobooks over the past few years and am always glad when there is a great narration of a great book. Awesome content everyone should read, and great narrator to bring life to Emerson's writing. All four friends I've gifted this audiobook to have enjoyed it.
