Publisher's Summary

When a novel like Huckleberry Finn or The Yearling comes along, it defies customary adjectives because of the intensity of the response it evokes in the reader. Such a tale is Old Yeller; to listen to this eloquently simply story of a boy and his dog in the Texas hill country is an unforgettable and deeply moving experience.

What the Critics Say

"There is something special in the telling of this story which makes it more than just a tender account of a boy's love for his dog, and more than a tale of frontier days. It is the combination of excellent writing and the sensitivity to human emotions that places it on a shelf with the classics." (Saturday Review of Literature)
"Exciting and heartwarming indeed. Recommended for adults and teenagers." (Library Journal)

Beyond Heartbreaking

If a book has an animal in it: Bingo! It's for me! And "Old Yeller" is just as rough 'n' tumble, just as slobbery sweet, just as beautiful as I remember it being.
Yes, it's heartbreaking, but it goes beyond that. It's about friendship, and how tough people used to be; it's about making bonds, and the strength and resilience of the human heart.
If you want a story about a boy and his dog, playing, without a care in the world--this book is not for you.
If you want a story about a boy and his dog, going beyond survival in a tough world, all because of a true and pure love--please, please, give this book a chance.
And if, chances are, you read this as a youngun', treat yourself to another listen: Beauty is timeless, and we never stop growing up...

Can't go wrong with a classic!

What did you love best about Old Yeller?

Great story that captured the heart of my son.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Old Yeller was the best character. Although he had no spoken lines, he was the heart of the story. He displayed loyalty, courage and love and even some comic relief and a touch of mischief.

What does Peter Francis James bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

For a child with dyslexia, the reader adds support as he reads along with the story. My son would not have experienced the story at all without the support of the reader. He would not have had the confidence to read a book of that length without the audio.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The only thing that kept my son from reading/listening in one sitting was bed time.
