Publisher's Summary

First published in 1913,0 Pioneers! was hailed by the critics as "a totally new kind of story," with characters "new in American fiction" and a heroine who was "a new and interesting type." Cather's heroine, Alexandra Bergson, would, in fact, become the model for the pioneer women of later literature. Spirited, courageous, and independent, the daughter of Swedish immigrants, Alexandra assumes responsibility for the family farm and her family upon the death of her father. Her devotion to the harsh, forbidding prairie transforms her land and her life.

Beautifully Read

If you could sum up O Pioneers! in three words, what would they be?

Pretty sounding prose.

What about Dana Ivey’s performance did you like?

I chose this selection after listening to Dana Ivey narrate A Common Life by Jan Karon

Any additional comments?

I know this is the abridged version of the story, but it was Dana Ivey that won me to the abridged version. Couldn't find a voice I liked as well in the unabridged selections.

O Pioneers!

I am listening to American Literature in preparation for a test. This selection was a surprise and a delight. I looked forward to the next segment. I would recommend.
