Editorial Reviews

Authors contained in this short story collection include Pushkin, Tolstoy, Flaubert, and Francois Coppe among others. Walter Zimmerman's subdued and reflective voice establishes a no-frills listening experience; the deep emotions of each story comes from the language itself, and his ponderous tone reflects the collection's overall moral gravity. Listeners will enjoy this lucid performance of classic - albeit some of the lesser known - 19th-century French and Russian stories.

Great stories, read adequately, usually

Narration on this is of the older sort, when acting was more subdued and more monotone readings ruled. There are some strange voices and some dry flat performances, but if you can work through that, the stories are gold. But I have a hard time listening for long as it makes me a little tired. I think that is as plain as things can be, so I will not elaborate. I really enjoy the selection and every one of them has charm and value.
