Publisher's Summary

In the dark days of a Shetland winter, torrential rain triggers a landslide that crosses the main Lerwick-Sumburgh road and sweeps down to the sea. At the burial of his old friend, Magnus Tait, Jimmy Perez watches the flood of mud and peaty water smash through a croft house in its path. Everyone thinks the croft is uninhabited, but in the wreckage he finds the body of a dark-haired woman wearing a red silk dress. In his mind she shares his Mediterranean ancestry, and soon he becomes obsessed with tracing her identity. Then it emerges that she was already dead before the landslide hit the house. Perez knows he must find out who she was and how she died.

My third Shetland book. The theme is wearning thin

These books vividly describe the remoteness, bleak weather, and social interaction in the Shetlands. After 3 books describing that, I've got the idea. Like the others this starts with a murder, follows the detectives asking a lot of questions, another murder, more questions, then close to the end, one of the police figures out the answer despite the author giving us no clues previously. The last half hour is always an explanation from the detective about how they figured it out. For me, this was not convincing.
Of course we get to know the characters of the different detectives as individuals, and their social interaction with each other and their private lives. That helps keep the books going.
I'd say, enjoy one or two of these books, enjoy being in the Shetlands for the time it takes, but then move on to something else.

One of my favourite authors

It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did I really enjoyed it and I didn't predict the outcome. I thought the narrator was excellent and I have really enjoyed this series of books but perhaps this isn't the strongest storyline of the series. It is still well worth reading and I'm sure I will revisit this book in the future.

It was as if I was there ...

What a brilliant way to feel the Shetland landscape and atmosphere....very easy to picture every scene throughout the audio.
