Publisher's summary

"There is a whistling sound behind us. Shells pass overhead and explode in a sheet of flame a hundred meters away."

When Paul Büumer and his classmates join the army, nothing has prepared them for the death and destruction they witness. Machine guns, huge artillery shells, and poison gas create a nightmare world for these young men and their older comrades. For months and years, attack is followed by counterattack.

Will any of Paul’s friends survive long enough to return to their families and loved ones? Will there be a place for them at home when peace finally comes? Can any of these soldiers make sense of the massive conflict in which they are involved?

Worthy concentrate of the whole

Affectionate performance. Remarque’s outlook on the war is as realistic as it is sad and hopeless. The title does not fully translate in English and takes away from the dual meaning that can be found in the irony that Remarque has intended. Nothing new in the Western front - means exactly that - there’s nothing new in war. It’s always greedy for life and full with death.

Buyer beware, this is a condensed version

The full novel is 200 pages. This condensed version tells the story in less than an hour. Excellent story, but this is a waste of a credit.
