When I saw a few reviews that said how difficult it was to hear the reading, I downloaded the audiobook again to check. Over the years, I have listened to this work at least five times myself because I enjoyed it so much. I simply don't understand. The range of volume is great: sometimes Plummer whispers the words, and they are a little hard to hear, but he IS whispering after all. Then at other times, he is emphatic, but he is not shouting. His reading really is a wonder in itself.
My wife and I also played this recording many times for our daughters when they were little, and they used to mimic the accents and repeat parts they'd memorized. We are Americans of Japanese ancestry, and we thoroughly enjoyed Plummer's putting on an astounding variety of accents to set off the characters in the story. None of us had any trouble understanding the words.
How anyone could think this is less than a five-star performance is beyond me.
I've enjoyed Plummer in his movie roles, but whenever I think of his performances, THIS recording is the first thing that comes to mind.

I've always liked this story, in all phases of my life. Christopher Plummer brings something new to this well known adventure. It takes a great performer to be able to voice a young girl, a mad hatter and a pudding!

I'm enjoying listening to this audio book, I'm reminded of reading this many years ago. I have one gripe though; when the narrator is doing Alice's voice he tends to get very quiet and his voice turns into a mumbling whisper... which is annoying because the rest of the book is read really well and very clearly.

The classic book being read is rather wonderful and interesting, the actor reading it is a versatile and talented man, BUT, his "Alice" voice really is too low and quiet to actually be heard. This ruins the whole recording; if you want to listen in a car, don't even bother trying, you won't be able to hear most of it. The volume levels are the reason why this gets one star- I wish I had heeded the other reviewers advice and not bought it. It IS a bargain, at first glance anyway, but as it's impossible to hear the majority of the book, it was a waste of money. I did want to like it though- unabridged, super reader, great book etc.

Alice is funny quirky unpredictable and challenging. Very creative wordplay with a charming dream quality.
Christopher Plummer throws himself into his task of narrating: brilliant.

The story is fascinating however the narration certainly needs improving. 1) The narrator speaks too fast majority of the time; unnaturally fast! 2) Alice is almost always mumbling / whispering and very fast!!! It's so annoying as it's so hard to hear!!! The huge difference in volume means it's very hard to adjust the speaker. When I adjusted it to the volume of the narrator, I could hardly hear Alice; and so I had to adjust it to Alice, but even at max, her voice is still too soft, and then the narrator became too loud!!! It really takes the pleasure out of it. Disappointed!!!
