Publisher's summary

Many Christians today feel overwhelmed as they try to live faithfully in a culture that seems increasingly hostile to their beliefs. Politics, marriage, sexuality, religious freedom - with an ever-growing list of contentious issues, believers find it harder than ever to hold on to their convictions while treating their friends, neighbors, coworkers, and even family members who disagree with respect and compassion. This isn't just a problem that affects individual Christians; if left unaddressed, the growing gap between the faithful and society's tolerance for public faith will have lasting consequences for the church in America.

Now the best-selling authors of unChristian turn their data-driven insights toward the thorny question of how Christians talk with people they know and love about the most toxic issues of our day. They help today's disciples understand what they believe and why and how to keep believing it without being judgmental and defensive. Listeners will discover the most significant trends that offer both obstacles and opportunities to God's people and how not only to challenge culture but to create and renew it for the common good. Perhaps most importantly, David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons invite fellow Christians to understand the heart behind opposing views and show them how to be loving, life-giving friends despite profound differences. This will be the go-to book for young adult and older believers who don't want to hide from culture but to engage and restore it.

Good ideas, but nearing liberal theology

The main thrust of this book is to love one another, which all of us Christians are guilty of not doing enough of. But at times this book treads much too close on the slippery slope of liberal theology, especially when it comes to racism and homosexuality. This books' authors are WAY too lenient towards the act and the movivations behind homosexuality, to the point where they encourage Christian bakers to make cakes for gay couples just for the sake of making friends. Jesus wants us to love everyone (even gays), but not at the expense of advocating sin! Christ said, "go and sin no more," not, "congrats on your gay marriage! Please, why don't you be my friend?" Let the listener beware.

Too preachy

I heard David Kinnamon speak at a conference and I enjoyed the talk. I did not expect the tone of this book. Instead of research and ideas, it was filled with directives. Even when I agreed with the premises I was annoyed.

Great perspective!

This helped me to gain a perspective of our times and provides good insight on where a believer fits into that. Good faith is what the lost need and this book defines good faith well!

Honest

I appreciate the honesty and simple call to live, love and believe that David and Gabe show as a refreshing paradigm for the church.

Great concept and thesis

Liked the thesis. Challenging.

Could the reader have been mundane? Made it difficult to listen too.

Outstanding!

Another thoughtful, well-researched assessment of our culture and the church by two men who are on the cutting edge of both.
