Publisher's Summary

Each year Americans start one million new businesses, nearly 80 percent of which fail within the first five years. Under such pressure to stay alive - Let alone grow - it’s easy for entrepreneurs to get caught up in a never-ending cycle of “sell it - do it, sell it - do it” that leaves them exhausted, frustrated, and unable to get ahead no matter how hard they try. This is the exact situation Mike Michalowicz found himself in when he was trying to grow his first company. Although it was making steady money, there was never very much left over and he was chasing customers left and right, putting in twenty-eight-hour days, eight days a week. The punishing grind never let up. His company was alive but stunted, and he was barely breathing.
That’s when he discovered an unlikely source of inspiration - pumpkin farmers. After reading an article about a local farmer who had dedicated his life to growing giant pumpkins, Michalowicz realized the same process could apply to growing a business. He tested the Pumpkin Plan on his own company and transformed it into a remarkable, multimillion-dollar industry leader. First he did it for himself. Then for others. And now you.
So what is the Pumpkin Plan?

Plant the right seeds: Don’t waste time doing a bunch of different things just to please your customers. Instead, identify the thing you do better than anyone else and focus all of your attention, money, and time on figuring out how to grow your company doing it.
Weed out the losers: In a pumpkin patch small, rotten pumpkins stunt the growth of the robust, healthy ones. The same is true of customers. Figure out which customers add the most value and provide the best opportunities for sustained growth. Then ditch the worst of the worst.
Nurture the winners: Once you figure out who your best customers are, blow their minds with care. Discover their unfulfilled needs, innovate to make their wishes come true, and overdeliver on every single promise.
Full of stories of other successful entrepreneurs, The Pumpkin Plan guides you through unconventional strategies to help you build a truly profitable blue-ribbon company that is the best in its field.

Critic Reviews

“Hard-hitting advice aimed directly at the entrepreneur who is stuck being a wandering generality instead of a meaningful specific. Plenty of seeds worth planting.” (Seth Godin, author of We Are All Weird)

This is the book I've been looking for

I've been thinking of narrowing my marketing for a while, to focus on one area and one niche of customers. This book takes it even further and shows me how to do it step by step, and WHY I need to to it.

I love the "assignments." Some of them reinforce what I've already done in my business (via "Book Yourself Solid" by Michael Port) and some of them take it even further.

This is an excellent book and I recommend it for any solopreneur / entrepreneur who wants to really be serious about getting out of "overwhelm" and get their business on the right track.

With regard to the narration, it cracked me up that he came up with a different voice for each of his client quotes. Appeals to my theater girl background.

Great Job...Great Stories and Examples!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Would fully recommend to anyone, I have already had two of my partners purchase and listen to it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Pumpkin Plan?

I think using the analogy of the pumpkin farmer is one of the simplest way to remember the steps needed to achieve success. Plant the seed...

What does Mike Michalowicz bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I have listened to many business books, Mike does a great job keeping you entertained and on task.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Look out Walmart, here we come!

Not as cheesy as first impressions

Seriously, Mike's won me over.... by the time I reached chapter 3, I knew the value in his offering was worth holding on for... so, I adjusted to his humour. This is a very enjoyable, and condensed alternative to M. Port's 'Book Yourself Solid, M. Gerber's 'E Myth' and Dan Priestley's slick funnel of books. Also, endearingly smooth in his own way..... now I'm compelled to read his other books! ... and visit his website! ... oh no.... YES, I have actually started implementing the Pumpkin Plan! Day 2 and ALREADY seeing desirable results :-) Thanks for sharing your perspective, Mike (No, we're not related and this is an honest review by a verifiable reader of Audible)

Awesome book if you can get past the narration.

What did you like most about The Pumpkin Plan?

A fantastic analogy and interesting / fresh presentation of fundamental business growth strategies. This is a gold mine of good info, whether you think you know it all or not, it can't hurt to get a reminder.

What did you like best about this story?

The analogy of pumpkin farming is interesting and simple to understand. Bang on.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I found the narration to be overly distracting. Nobody needs a hyper-emotive Kermit the Frog adding condescending fluff into a book with such solid foundations. Sorry, Michael. Stick to writing and leave the narration to the pro's.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Lots of helpful info. If you can't find a nugget in this you're a lost cause. I cringed at the narration too many times to count.

Any additional comments?

Any business owner should be able to find some value in this book. Well worth a listen / read. Great content overall.
