The book was good but could have been much better

The book does a good job explaining how a church leader can become more emotionally healthy, which I appreciate as a church leader. I like how it's divided up into two sections: the inner life and the outer life. I got a lot out of the information.

However, the book could have been much better for three reasons:

First, the author has no formal education in emotional health. Spending money on this book I expected to here from a professional. That was disappointing.

Second, the book is solely geared toward church leaders. As a church leader myself, I didn't mind that, but it makes the title of the book deceiving. If the book is for leaders becoming emotionally healthy, then it should cover all types of leaders in all types of organizations.

Third, the author has some clear biases that were painfully obvious. For example, he would create certain scenarios to prove his points, but in these scenarios he would always talk negatively of youth ministers or worship leaders. Or another example is the fact that the author clearly has a bias against growing and successful churches. Any time those types of churches were mentioned, the author would approach it negatively, critically, and skeptically.

A must read for every pastor

This book is rich with wisdom and practical advice. It is up close and personal in the real life of pastoral ministry so it is extremely relevant. But be warned. This book will challenge you personally and calls for change in the culture, practice and expectations in typical evangelical church leadership. If you are serious about cultivating a personal transforming relationship with Christ that fuels your life and leadership. This book is for you.

Powerful!!!

I'm not sure where to start. I am so glad I moved forward with purchasing this book dispite a few negative reviews. One review said that this book is only for ministry leaders, this is not true. I am a Christian and I work for the military, and hold a Graduate degree in Organizational Leadership. This book exposed so many parts of my life that needed to be transformed both personally and professionally. I want to recommend this book to my University for those of us that want to represent Christ in how we lead, even in secular jobs and positions. The end of the book Chapter 8 and beyond is the best. The author dives into keeping the Sabbath, this chapter is outstanding. As a "habitual over-worker" this touched me so deeply. I always feared not doing enough. Going to school, working multiple jobs, volunteering for the church, raising a child and my marriage were all so overwhelming. 3-4 hours of sleep is my normal, it will take some time to undo what I have done, but I'm ready. He goes into explaining Power and Influence, this was not touched at all in my Leadership studies. This shined a light into a whole new area of my life. The Author end explaining how to find God in loss, and his transition from his position of Senior Pastor. I have purchased many books on audiable and have never bothered to write a review..... this book was worth ever penny.

One of the best books I’ve ever read

This is one of the best books I have ever read! Whether you are a church leader or a volunteer leader, or seeking a deeper understanding of marriage, singleness, sabbath, team building, or discovering how your past affects how you lead, this is a must read for any spiritual stage. 10/10!

Good challenge to keep your lives in order

This is a great book to challenge you keep things in the proper balance, keep relationships healthy and strong, and often by doing the things that are hard but that we know that we should do.

Good food for thought for any Christian

Though I'm not a formal leader (pastor, small group leader, business manager etc), I believe leadership presents itself in micro and macro ways (as big as leading a church to as small as guiding a friend), so I found the contents of this book very relevant to my Christian walk. It challenged me to recognize my shadows, reflect on how I prioritize God in my decisions, and more. Scazzero uses a lot of personal experience and case studies to show the spectrum of situations that one may encounter, which I found helpful. There are little "quizzes"/assessments at the end of each chapter to apply the contents to your own life. One thing I would do differently: I would buy the physical book. I'm a visual person and I want to take more time reading this book, soaking it in and exploring my own experiences, so that'll be my next step. But as for the book in itself, it definitely started the conversation between me and my fellowship group, and I recommend it to others too, because in the end we are the leaders of our own lives who make the choices to follow Jesus.

Probably best for multi-staff church

Listening to the audio book, I found myself intrigued with the story of 4 conversions but then drifted away as the overall work speaks much more to pastors and leaders in much larger churches than mine. Being in a church of less than 100, I didn't connect with much.
