Publisher's summary

We've seen the negative impact of self-serving leaders in every sector of our society. Not infrequently, they end up bringing down their entire organization. But there is another way. Servant leaders lead by serving their people, not by exalting themselves. In this collection, edited by legendary business author and lifelong servant leader Ken Blanchard and his longtime editor Renee Broadwell, leading businesspeople, best-selling authors, and spiritual leaders offer tools for implementing this proven - but for some, still radical - leadership model.

The book is organized into six parts. Part one, Fundamentals of Servant Leadership, describes basic aspects of servant leadership. Part two, Elements of Servant Leadership, highlights some of the different points of view of servant leaders. Part three, Lessons in Servant Leadership, focuses on what people have learned on a personal level from observing servant leadership in action. Part four, Exemplars of Servant Leadership, features people who have been identified as classic servant leaders. Part five, Putting Servant Leadership to Work, offers firsthand accounts of people who have made servant leadership come alive in their organizations. Part six, Servant Leadership Turnarounds, illustrates how servant leadership can dramatically impact both results and human satisfaction in organizations.

This is the most comprehensive and wide-ranging guide ever published for what is, in every sense, a better way to lead.

Terrible

I wanted a book outlining the fundamentals of servant leadership, not a history lesson on Jesus Christ.

Not great service

This book is written from a heavily Christian perspective. This seems somewhat ironic because throughout the book the message is to serve all. But because the message is so heavily steeped in Christian mythology it seems to be narrowly focused. The book is like a series of written sermons. There is very little offered in terms of supporting information. This is not the first time I have found myself in an Audible book that is from a considerably narrow Christian perspective. I wish that they would provide labeling for this.

There are many times that this very conceptual approach begs for a broader more researched perspective. The concept of trust is repeated throughout and at almost every mention, I wanted a definition of the way this vague concept was being used. Like so much of American Christianity, there is this sort of absurd character of the humble hero. It is the blue-eyed Jesus, here to provide salvation, even to those who do not know they need it. Despite the projection, it is hardly humble.

Though disappointed in this bias and unresearched perspective, one cannot help but be drawn to the concept of Servant Leadership. Like a sermon, one can be inspired by some of what is here, even if filtered through a heavy dose of cynicism, as it was with me.

Must read for everyone.

We are all leaders in someone's life. if we all understood that we were on earth to serve one another the world would be a better place. This work shares that message again and again.

Great read if you’re already familiar with SL

This has been one of my favorite servant leadership books to date. The personal accounts were inspiring and motivating. They really gave me fresh insight on how servant leadership looks different in many situations, though keeping the same core principles and how I can better apply it in my life without actually telling me what to do. The narration was great as well.

A Book Well Worth The Listening

I absolutely loved all of the essays in the book. I didn’t like the term “servant leadership.” I learned in this book that I love servant leadership and have been practicing it for most of the last 40 years. Now, I have much deeper understanding and new ideas to apply. Thanks for this book!!!!
