Great overview of Lean Manufacturing

This is the second book I've listened to by Clydebank Business on the topic of agile methods, project management techniques and related topics. I was sent a free review copy.

Clydebank's books are excellent bird's-eye views of the subject matter and this one is again accompanied by an included free PDF file to enhance the audio content. You don't need to actually have the PDF which contains some infographics and diagrams to hand but it is helpful and a nice touch.

Listening to this book will teach you what "lean manufacturing" means, why you might want to consider it as a business process and the advantages and disadvantages it offers. Lean manufacturing is in essence a philosophical approach to the elimination of wasteful practices and procedures as well as actual tangible and intangible waste such as excess stock and inventory management right through to sub-optimal procedures, meetings, documentation (or lack of it) and so on. Much of this stemmed from a system developed at Toyota and the book goes into some depth about this origination along with how this has led to many of the lean processes and practitioners using some Japanese terms - something which I personally find a barrier and in my opinion can lead to an impression of Lean as being a fad or fashion rather than a sound foundation on which to eliminate waste and improve inefficiency. The book tries to balance this Japanese-naming convention with a good exploration of the concepts behind the words.

It's a tricky thing to try and explore such a vast subject in just over an hour of audio but, well actually they do a good job of it. Lucy Vest's faultless narration arrives at a sensible pace and with the right intonation to stop you nodding off like a student in a sleepy afternoon algebra class and her accent is clear enough for all English speakers, whatever the continent, to understand - an important thing since the topic contains a fairly substantial amount of elements and they arrive in quite a torrent as you might expect from a "quick start guide".

If you have an interest in learning more about alternate ways to run or operate a manufacturing business then you should definitely start here and see if Lean fits with what you're thinking of achieving before diving further and deeper into this expansive area of efficiency methodology and thought processes. Even if you aren't in the manufacturing industry then you may well find a benefit in this commute-sized audiobook's proddings on how to think again about some of the things you do and why you do them.

Don't know Lean? Start Here!

I was given this product in exchange for my honest review. I didn't know much about Lean Management, but the audiobook definitely explained the core concepts very clearly. It's important to keep in mind that its structured in a textbook format, so it can feel a little cut and dry, but it definitely has some enlightening information. I definitely recommend.

Business!

Short review for short book: Lean QuickStart Guide: The Simplified Beginner's Guide to Lean is what it says it is: Lean QuickStart Guide: The Simplified Beginner's Guide to Lean. I am not sure what more to say. Oh it has a PDF that is included! So that is nice! Nothing wrong with this, but again nothing that fantastic to give a 5 star!

Lucy Vest read this too as it was about business. Nice and dry! Nothing wrong with her! Want to learn about Lean in 1 hr and 13 mins? Then this is your book!

Review of Lean

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If it were a friend who is interested in business or likes books on business and that sort of thing.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'm not sure, I haven't really looked to see what I would be interested in reading next.

Which scene was your favorite?

There wasn't really a scene that was my favorite since it was more or less an informative book, not a "story".

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The same one as in the title.

Any additional comments?

I thought this book was very informative for business people. It made some interesting points and I think it would really be helpful for people who are starting a business or trying to come up with a business plan. Even those who are in supervisory positions might find this book helpful. It has a lot of great points about quality management and making sure the work environment is how it should be.

Overview of Incredibly Detailed System

What did you love best about Lean QuickStart Guide?

I am deeply impressed with the attention to the detail of the Lean Management System that is covered in this audio book.

What does Lucy Vest bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ms. West is extremely articulate, and clearly enunciates an enormous amount of information per minute without sounding rushed.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it was not for me, but this was my first introduction to the Lean Management system specifically. I found myself wanting to stop and reflect upon or more deeply explore concepts that were discussed at several points in the audio book. I think if this were a system with which I was already familiar or was a refresher, then one sitting would have been fine.

Any additional comments?

I was really surprised at the comprehensive coverage of a very detailed and complex system. It did not make the Lean Management system seem impossible or overwhelming. Rather, it seems to be a system where all aspects of an organization have been very thoughtfully considered and integrated into a system of improvement for the individual as well as the organization. The smallest, most remote seeming aspects of corporate business are taken into consideration.

Precise, concise - lean

Exactly what I bargained for - a quick, fact-based explanation. I didn't expect or want a story or someone's aphorisms. I also admit I liked the reader's accent. Well worth the price and the time required to listen.

Good Intro that Covers Lean Process

This book is a quick listen that teaches you about the lean process and more. I got some good ideas on how to apply the lean philosophy in my personal life.

The book provided good introduction on the Lean process and what drives this business model that originated at Toyota. The download guide mentioned was provided by Audible so it was very helpful to reference the different diagrams while listening.

I learned that the Lean philosophy can be utilized outside of manufacturing which was surprising to me as I only heard about lean and Six Sigma when I worked for a manufacturing company. After hearing the presentation I could see why it could be applicable to any organization. The 3 M’s (Muda, Mura and Muri) were discussed in jargon that was easy to understand. My big take away was the concepts presented in the elimination of waste (muda). Other take always that I got was the need for constant innovation and effecting positive change.

The narrator has a strong British accent and reads a little fast but I think it was suitable for a business book.
