Publisher's summary

President-elect Donald J. Trump lays out his professional and personal worldview in this classic work—a firsthand account of the rise of America's foremost deal-maker.

"I like thinking big. I always have. To me it's very simple: If you're going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big." —Donald J. Trump

Here is Trump in action—how he runs his organization and how he runs his life—as he meets the people he needs to meet, chats with family and friends, clashes with enemies, and challenges conventional thinking. But even a maverick plays by rules, and Trump has formulated time-tested guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest accomplishments; he shatters myths; he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker's art. And throughout, Trump talks—really talks—about how he does it. Trump: The Art of the Deal is an unguarded look at the mind of a brilliant entrepreneur—the ultimate read for anyone interested in the man behind the spotlight.

The Man Who Would be President

Great Book, Great Narration. The President tells a story of value investing in high-stakes real estate. From small business to big business. How things were done in NYC of 1980s. Get ready to be surprised. The President jumps into deals that seem doomed and complicated, finding the value through negotiation. “Driving Total Value” could be the alternate title of the book.

Where others would be ground and run-down by the problems, President Trump triumphed with perseverance. Also, the book gets into the creation of an organization in the 1980’s. You don’t get the grotesque modern HR stuff we hear from our employer; you get an understanding of how a CEO thinks about people and who could be great. Like the Stephen Schwartzman book, “What it Takes”. I would say that Schwartzman’s book is more inspirational, but Trump’s book is more personal. You could couple these books. Like the Carl Icahn book, but you would not want to work for King Icahn. Like the Soros book “Alchemy of Finance”, but you don’t detect the hatred of people and desire to burn down the world.

The skating rink chapter, the management of city politics, how to walk away from bad terms, how historical preservation is just politics, and how to drive a project. This is a worthy business discussion on Value investing and perseverance. Also, it’s great to understand the 1980’s in its own words, terminology and culture. This is not an interpretation of a loser liberal arts professor or grimy activist journalist. Like Schwartzman, Trump gives you first person information and insight. Even a final chapter on accomplishment, philanthropy, and personal involvement.

You get positive and growth minded optimism in this book. You see why a person of this mindset would see the world differently from weird and sad mental patients we see in many political professions or a career Washington DC swamp thief. Totally different humans. Imagine, a President that had a real job before the White House? You had one. A book from a man from another world and time.

Surprisingly enjoyable!

I bought this book intending on getting to understand President Trump better. I wasn't particularly expecting it to be well written, or even less, "enjoyable".

What I got was a three. A better understanding of President Trump, a VERY well written book, and highly enjoyable to listen to!

I can't recommend purchasing this enough!

This Explains It

I listened to this book after Trump was elected POTUS. It's basically the blue print for his campaign.

The guy is crass, unapologetic, manipulative, and relentless in his quest to get a good deal.

Manipulate tax laws or leverage the media to put pressure on others like he did with the Woolman Ice Rink renovation.

Trump is Trump.

This book was written in the 80s. If you're looking for him to pivot... it's not going to happen.

This book gives you a good explanation of how he operates and I was slightly more optimistic about his presidency.

Love him or hate him, this book gives you insight into how Trump operates & thinks.

Narration is good, too with a pompous northeast accent.

Great Book!

Great story about patience and never settling for less than what you want. I like how he never jumped into a deal to fast he had several steps he would make before getting completely involved in anything.
