Publisher's Summary

August 29, 2005. Hurricane Katrina is approaching the Gulf Coast. A Slidell, Louisiana, man, Kennard Jackley, makes the decision to ride out powerful Hurricane Katrina in his house. Although his home is raised 14 feet above the ground, the rising storm surge from Katrina could flood the house. But the retired merchant marine feels he can survive whatever nature has to offer. Jackley's wife evacuates, leaving Kennard at home alone to weather the storm. As Katrina roars on shore, water rises near the Jackley's waterfront home. The water breaks through the front door and begins to flood the house. As the water rises, Jackley sees other homes in the area floating away. With no way out now, he is forced to wait out the storm, which finally abates. The water recedes slowly, but there is floating debris everywhere. The day after Katrina, Kennard surveys the changed landscape. In the days following, he is able to get word to his wife that he is safe.

Surviving Katrina

This was an interesting story of a couple who survived Hurricane Katrina. The wife left and the husband stayed home & weathered the storm. As usual, Jim Cantore is an excellent narrator who brings the perfect balance of tone. If you enjoy weather related tales, you will enjoy this one. The couple were very fortunate to survive.
