Publisher's summary

A remarkably bold and inspiring story of crime, motherhood, and redemption - not since Cupcake Brown's A Piece of Cake has there been a memoir this unforgettable.

You want to know about the struggle of growing up poor, black, and female? Ask any girl from any 'hood. You want to know what it takes to rise above your circumstances when all the cards are stacked against you? Ask me.

Comedian Patricia Williams, who, for years, went by her street name, Rabbit, was born and raised in Atlanta's most troubled neighborhood at the height of the crack epidemic.

One of five children, Pat watched as her alcoholic mother struggled to get by on charity, cons, and petty crimes. At age seven, Pat was taught to roll drunks for money. At 12, she was targeted for sex by a man eight years her senior; by 13, she was pregnant. By 15, Pat was a mother of two.

Alone at 16, Pat was determined to make a better life for her children. But with no job skills and an eighth-grade education, her options were limited. She learned quickly that hustling and humor were the only tools she had to survive.

Rabbit is an unflinching memoir of cinematic scope and unexpected humor that offers a rare glimpse into the harrowing reality of life on America's margins - a powerful true story of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of love.

Editor's Pick

Think Tiffany Haddish with a dash of Elaine Stritch
"Maybe you had a great childhood with totally functional parents who loved you very much and made sure you knew it. I’m happy for you, I swear! Fortunately for the rest of us, we have Ms. Pat, who is the patron saint of coping through laughter. Ms. Pat was just a kid when she was repeatedly sexually assaulted, and she was pregnant by the time she was 13. By 15, she was a mother of two. Through it all, she developed a keen hustler’s spirit and stayed afloat until she discovered she had a knack for comedy. No one else can make me laugh (or cry) like Ms. Pat."

Ms. Pat has triumphed over a hopeless life situation. I was moved to tears at what this courageous woman did to overcome her struggles and that she never gave up. She is my new hero.

Tragedy becomes Comedy!

This book was a surprise. Despite horrific circumstances, Miss Pat survives and eventually thrives. Her down to earth demeanor and obvious love of family in the face of degradation make her memoir a one of a kind. She keeps it fresh and brutally honest whether she describing her mother's breakup with a boyfriend or her own realization that getting a regular job with criminal record was harder than it looked. I laughed and I cried and I can't wait to see what she'll do next.

The Autobiography That I Didn’t Know I Needed!

Kudos to Ms. Pat for sharing her story. This story doesn’t sugarcoat. The honesty of crime, drugs, molestation, and family issues made me feel sad for the Rabbit and her siblings because it was normal for them. Was it the love of the “angles” that made Ms.Pat’s path different or her ability to not think about the things that had happened to her... maybe it was both!

Emotional Rollercoaster!!

Loved the story. It was an emotional ride. I felt anger, sadness, happiness. and laughter! Many situations that were easier to laugh at than cry. The story felt real and completely relatable. I understand the huge accomplishment it was for the author to read it, but narration could've been so much better. Had it been read by an actual voice actor with fluency and emotion, I think this story could have been much more popular. The story has purpose and impact, it's a shame that it won't reach more readers/listeners

A story you never want to end

Raw. Authentic. Inspiring.
This book makes you think and feel deeper than you can imagine! I loved how genuine the story came across when spoken by its author, Patricia Williams aka Rabbit. It’s spoken from first-hand experience that is hard to imagine, yet, undeniably relatable through her humble delivery. Her answer to rising up in life, from being dragged down by the hood to becoming a productive, responsible person in society, is LOVE.

There’s absolutely no shortage of love felt while listening to Rabbit’s story, whether it’s the way she sees the good in all people, constantly trying to cater to, care for and nurture those around her or feeling like you want to throw your arms around her yourself while listening to the shitty life she’s had to endure. She just wants acceptance, a sense of belonging, which she rarely ever felt growing up. Her story gives validation to me and to so many others...it doesn’t matter it one’s rich or poor, black, brown or white, faced hardships or had a “Leave It To Beaver” life, we all just want to feel that acceptance and to be loved in this life.

Rabbit made wrong decisions in life, for sure, which could make a “bad rap sheet” add up to a whole lot of judgment from others. But, you’ll never convince me SHE is bad because of those choices! She lives by her heart, has sacrificed so much and has broken her family’s mold of being defined in such a way...all while raising and inspiring a whole new generation of children the same!

Rabbit showed, demanded and finally understood, the love that she had always been neglected of, but never stopped dreaming about. Thank God for putting her husband in her life, as well. That was not an accident. When you lead with your heart, like Rabbit does, God will always protect you and give you wonderful opportunities to have and do better in life...no matter what choices you’ve made. In my opinion, her “rap sheet of love” has erased anything bad from her past. A MUST READ!!
