Publisher's summary

Project Animal Farm provides a riveting and revealing look at what truly happens behind farm doors, as discovered by a fearless young woman.

Sonia Faruqi, a 25-year-old Ivy League graduate and investment banker, had no idea that the night she arrived at the doorstep of an organic dairy farm would mark the beginning of a journey that would ultimately wind all the way around the world. Instead of turning away from the animal cruelty she would come to witness, Sonia made the most courageous decision of her life - a commitment to change our current system of food production.

Driven by impulsive will and a new passion, Sonia left everything she knew and loved behind to search the planet for solutions that would benefit not only farm animals but also human health, the environment, farmers, and consumers. In doing so she would live with farmers, hitchhike with strangers, and repeatedly risk her life.

Heartfelt and brimming with rare insights, Project Animal Farm takes listeners through a top-secret tour of egg warehouses in Canada, dairy feedlots in the United States, farm offices in Mexico, lush Mennonite pastures in Belize, flocks of chickens in Indonesia, and factory farms in Malaysia.

Lively and filled with insight and suspense, Project Animal Farm illuminates a hidden world that plays a part in all of our lives.

Eye opening

Definitely changed me. Very eye opening but not surprising. Sad part is that when you talk about what you’ve read to friends and family, they don’t believe it and won’t investigate on their own. They just want to stick their heads in the sand and go about how they always have 😞. Very well written, researched and performed.

Good listen

Truthful and full of wisdom told from a young heart. As a middle aged fledgling suburban farmer this was a great perspective on a challenging subject. Thank you for sharing your story.

Fantastic Read, Questionable Summary!

So, many people hate this book, hate the story, hate the author. The truth is that the story she relays and her response to this story is an honest look through the industry. If you feel that animals deserve to be restored to their wild home of origin, good for you. It’s very clear that the majority of “Social Activists”, “Social Warriors” have almost no actual knowledge of the stories they choose to fight. In the authors opinion what humans do to species of animals that have been managed for centuries is unacceptable. It’s her opinion, it’s not an absolute truth that these animals have to be treated any different, better, or worse. Her answer to the problems she saw was to hire more women, not that more women want to work in this industry or that it is an absolute truth that doing so would actually change anything. Unless she has some facts about how women are immune to greed, profit margins, or bad choices. Or that changing the management of animals and the increase in cost would be passed to the lowest educated, lowest income, least healthy populations world wide. It’s not just profit margin production food that is killing the uneducated masses it’s lifestyle. So good luck to her and her minions.

A Great Worldwide Farm Tour

I, like many I assume, who have stumbled upon this diamond-in-the-rough am trying to learn more about where my food comes from. The book was an excellent multifaceted look into animal farming/ranching practices from around the world, not just a narrow American snapshot. I also greatly enjoyed not being “preached at” while reading; it’s educational while bringing the classroom to life.

Entertaining and believable

I found the book entertaining and enjoyable. Nothing I read is a surprise but the conclusions , in the form of recommendations, are not supported by the authors observations for example the recommendation to turn slaughter inspections over to the government is entirely off base given they are the inspectors you encountered already. What is absent are hard facts but then that wasn’t the premise of the book. I enjoyed the conversational tone at each location and am amazed that you captured so much of it especially given you were in there on the sly Whole multi hour long conversations were covered. I am astounded that all these folks allowed you into their facilities.
