Publisher's summary

Written as a letter to her children, Kelly Corrigan's Lift is a tender, intimate, and robust portrait of risk and love; a touchstone for anyone who wants to live more fully. In Lift, Corrigan weaves together three true and unforgettable stories of adults willing to experience emotional hazards in exchange for the gratifications of raising children.

Lift takes its name from hang gliding, a pursuit that requires flying directly into rough air, because turbulence saves a glider from sinking out. For Corrigan, this wisdom becomes a metaphor for all of life's most meaningful endeavors, particularly the great flight that is parenting.

Corrigan serves it up straight: how mundanely and fiercely her children have been loved, how close most lives occasionally come to disaster, and how often we fall short as mothers and fathers. Lift is for everyone who has been caught off guard by the pace and vulnerability of raising children, to remind us that our work is important and our time limited.

Like Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea, Lift is a meditation on the complexities of a woman's life, and like Corrigan's memoir The Middle Place, Lift is boisterous and generous, a book readers and listeners cant wait to share.

A story for the heart

Kelly just knows how to use words to tell stories that speak to the heart of what matters in life.

Just have to say...I cannot believe Mrs Ford let you sit on her lap! I can only remember that white hair

as if Martha Washington was her older sister. But I do remember Jill Milstead and I getting caught stealing peppermint lifesavers from Ms McGee’s desk and I thought I’d never get over the shame and remorse.
I don’t think I did.
btw, an old Levine family lore is when Mary called my mom to come pick me up from your house at lunchtime bc I wouldn’t eat the sandwiches she was serving and asked for a shrimp cocktail. My mom still feels disapproval she got from Wooded Lane.

Loved It

Kelly is a gifted story teller and has a knack for pulling heartstrings without being gushy or mushy. She captures the essence of being a parent, the joys and the heartache. She’s funny and true, much like Anne Lamott.

Listened to it twice! Great quick listen!

Where does Lift rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a book I always have on my iphone. Great to share with others on a long car ride or 2 hour flight...I love the stories she tells. Not sure it would mean as much if I had not read her first book prior, which I highly recommend..another great story.

What did you like best about this story?

This story is so real...she can tell it like it is! It makes you laugh, and cry!

Have you listened to any of Kelly Corrigan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes...love all of them!

Any additional comments?

If you are a mom...take the time to read...and reflect on your own kids!

Great book

Kelly shared her heart in this book. She’s vulnerable and puts herself out there. Thanks Kelly for bravery saying what us mothers think but are too afraid to admit!

Really monotone and dark recollection of memories

I thought this was going to be more uplifting, but it was a series of recollections that were kind of depressing. The author is super monotone too. Hard to listen to. Felt super amateur.

Weird mom venting

Have a conversation with your friends instead of reading this strange book. You will get much more out of it.
