Publisher's summary

Jesse James grew up in Clay County, Missouri, a place where north and south conflicted over the issue of slavery. Tensions grew in the lead-up to the Civil War, and James’ Southern loyalties meant he had to make a decision. When war broke out, Jesse and his brother Frank joined the Confederate guerrillas known as “bushwhackers” alongside other notorious characters like “Bloody Bill”. By the age of 17, Jesse had escaped death twice and gained a reputation as a ruthless killer. This was just the beginning, though—this short book explains how Jesse went on to live a life of crime that made him one of the most the most infamous outlaws and bank robbers of the Wild West.

Jesse James

Another hour of history from In60Learning. These short books are a great way to learn just a little bit about an event or a person.

Jesse James has become a Robin Hood-ish character from the Old West, when in fact he was just a common outlaw. This short book touches on the pivotal events in his life and death, giving the listener a glimpse into what might have made him the man he was.

If you are looking for a short history lesson into Jesse James' life, give this one a listen. The narrator does a pretty good job, but his voice was a little robotic at times. I was given an audiobook version of this book by the publisher and chose to review it.

Wrong Time, Wrong Place, Wrong Environment

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is for the audio copy of Jesse James: Infamous Outlaw of the Old West, by in60Learning and narrated by Larry G. Jones. I really like the in60Learning books. They remind me of the short story history books I read as a kid. This was a very quick listen and it gave me more insight into Jesse James than I had before.

Very educational

This is a quick book but there is so much information packed into it. It starts from birth right up to his death and gives the listener a rundown of his life and some explanation of how Jesse James came to be the outlaw he was. I didn't care much for the narration on this one but overall it was an excellent listen and gave a bit of information I wasn't aware of. I'm sure anyone interested in Jesse James would find it worth listening to. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Legend Versus Fact

Have you ever notice how they always say “The Legend of Jesse James”? One of the reasons why, of course, is there is conflicting and often times “fake news” regarding Jesse James. “Jesse James: Infamous Outlaw of the Old West” goes a long way in assembling known facts and stringing together the story of the nineteenth century bad guy and he was a bad guy.

Jesse James robbed banks and trains and shot people; there’s no getting around that. And I’m not sure why we try to romanticize and glorify those evil deeds. If you think that way then this book will probably help fortify those thoughts. If you don’t think that way it will, no doubt, help solidify your point as well. This book is, if nothing else, a compilation of Jesse James facts as they are known and I don’t think there’s any stark revelations contained herein. None the less, it’s an enjoyable sixty minute listen.

Two negatives: Why is he an “Outlaw of the Old West”? Missouri? Iowa? Minnesota??? Old West? Not what comes to mind when I think of the old west. I also found Larry G. Jones’ voice a little annoying and if this book had been any longer than one hour I probably would have bailed. I understand pairing his “homey twang” with the story of an 1800’s outlaw but a homey twang is a homey twang and it does tend to grate on some people.

All-in-all “Jesse James: Infamous Outlaw of the Old West” is well worth the one hour investment.

Another Excellent Learning Tool

I, again, am very pleased to review a book by in60Learning. This book tells of the life of Jesse James, all of his life. The main thing I remember learning about Jesse was that he was a notorious bank robber. However, there was much more to his life than that. He didn't start out robbing banks, he beginning was deep seated in the Civil War. He and his brother Frank were part of the Confederate Army and did atrocious things to try to win the war for the South. Hollywood loves to glamorize the James brothers but in reality neither were very nice people. To learn, even in a snapshot, of what all Jesse James did in his life is quite eye opening and should never be romanticized by anyone. in60Learning does a wonderful job, as usual, in giving the main points of Jesse James' life. If you are truly interested in learning about the real Jesse James and not the Hollywood version, then you should check out this book! The narrator did a good job reading the material and did so at a nice pace.

Interesting look at the Wild West

In a short span of time The listener is taken to the period when legends were made and Jesse James is certainly amoung the
elite group of notorious criminals of that era.

Its fun to get a peek into that period in the time it takes you to get to work or go shopping.

very educational

My family is related to the James family. My great uncle by marriage was cousins with Jesse James. I have always enjoyed the stories of Jesse James and his gang. This book is not a story. It is the actual history of Jesse James before, during, and after his days as an outlaw. It also gives history or the whole James family.

In60 Learning has done a great job gathering all the information in this book. Larry G Jones narrates the book. I was not all that crazy about his reading. He seemed to pause a lot. It also seemed like maybe he was reading on a child's level.

Robinhood of the South

I love the books by in60Learning! What a great way to maximize an hour and learn about some from history. This book was on the life and death of Jesse James, which I knew absolutely nothing about prior to listening. I am kind of amazed how/why Jesse seemed to get the notoriety vs him and his brother Frank, since they both seemed to do these criminal acts together.....a question the world will never know

Wonderful! Truth not the legend! Pictures!

Jesse James: Infamous Outlaw of the Old West
By: in60Learning
Narrated by: Larry G. Jones
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
I have a special interest in Jesse James, I signed up on 23 and me and found I am distantly related to him on my mother's side. Not that this is something to brag about since he was a killer. This book was very good about going through his life and telling about places, people, and the truth about Jesse rather than the legend. I live in Missouri now so it is interesting to hear all the places right around me he lived and visited. I really enjoyed this book and it is filled with pictures too. Would recommend this to anyone who loves history!
The narrator was perfect! Nice voice that fit the subject!
